So, summer is coming to an end, the cooler weather is starting to move in and hunting season is just around the corner.

What did you learn this past summer?

For me, I found out that I like bigger, more hand filling handles on my knives(which I plan to incorporate in some new designs this fall/winter). I got more control and was not fumbling as much.
Camping with a 3 year old is a lot of work, but can be VERY FUN and rewarding.
PJ cotton balls are the absolute BOMB.....WOW, they are now my new favourite way of fire making. I can't recommend these enough:thumbup::thumbup:

Feather sticks are not as easy as I thought they would be and edge geometry makes a big difference.

Finally, I did not get out there enough this year. I really hope to get out a lot more next year. Looking forward to some tenting with my Son next season.

I am sure there is more but that is a good start for now.

I learned how easily one get in trouble with an injury. I broke my wrist and gained significant humility.

I also got ultra-light stove bug and learned how to deal with the wind.

I set a nest box last autumn.
A pair of tree sparrows settled in and I could learn about their family.

I learned how many morel mushrooms I can eat before I :barf:(around 3 lbs:D)

I learned its hard to beat a good fire with my son.

I learned mossy rocks are slippery. My wife learned this at the exact moment I learned this.:o

I learned that a bear does sh#@ in the woods.

I learned you guys are some awesome dudes.

i learned several things related to cutting back on the amount of gear i carry even car camping...less clutter makes for a much happier camp, even if i have the way to get alot of stuff there doesn't mean that i should bring all that stuff.

i learned alot about my sleeping arrangements.

i also have a long list of new gear i want to buy (does it count as "need" if its an upgrade?).

this summer i:
got my first custom knife
did my first passaround
won my first giveaway
learned what fatwood is
learned several things about modding knives
learned the basics of leather work and made some sheaths.
learned how to make a bowdrill fire!
learned how to make fire straws
learned how to make a sheath out of PVC
learned how to make a tree fall in a certain direction to avoid becoming one with the ground

Uncle Sam screwed up a lot of our plans this summer, but we did get a chance to get out a few times. I learned:

In Texas, you can never have enough water during the summer!

Cactus hurts when you fall in a patch:eek:

Fire ants suck (always new that, just got a good reminder):(

Texas summers suck when you want to play with fire...:grumpy:

Hennessy hammocks rock for lighter-weight summer trips!

Always be prepared and expect the worse when it comes to storms and severe weather...even if you don't get hit, the preparation continues to provide valuable lessons.

After several flights this summer I was able to really refine my carry-on and check-in EDC and what I consider critical essentials when traveling.

Chaco sandals rock for creek hiking!

I really like the MerHarness, (figure-eight 550-cord) where I carry my Fallkniven WM-1:thumbup:

That battery-operated tent fan (although too big for backpacking) really works during the heat of the summer when tent camping!

Oh, as j williams said...I continued to learn some great stuff here on WSS from a great collections of guys/gals!!!!:thumbup:

I learned that having a small GPS is fun and a great survival tool

I download the data from my GPS to my PC
I can see my route and all the elevations
It's kinda fun to look at
You can give your buddy exact coordinates to your fav spot or send him the GPS file of the hike

For my mt. biking
It has eliminated the need to buy those Cateye bike computers
****************************************

They need to incorporate satellite images in GPS units
Like Google earth
I think the problem now is the amount of storage space required for the satellite images
It will be awesome when you can see the satellite image of your location on your GPS

It looks like there is a way to convert the Garmin files into Goggle Earth images (Not my data....I avoid the 210 at all costs!)
