What did you use your sebenza for today?

I wiped them down and took a glamour shot.

When I’m camping, one concession I make to the modern world is Starbucks
Instant coffee. I might like it better than regular coffee! My daughter, who is also a stalwart camper calls it ā€œdad crackā€. She’s not wrong.

Used my small 21 to open the precious pouch. Slicing it open works better than trying to tear it open in case you spill the contents.

Stripping the jacket off some wire with my small 21 Tanto. When you need to make a long length of wire bare, as I had to do here, the pocket knife works better than conventional wire stripers. It helps if the knife isn’t crazy sharp, and if it has a convex primary bevel. Being an older 21, with the lower rockwell S35VN, this knife has a good ā€œworking edgeā€ that does the trick nicely without biting into the copper.

FWIW, very sharp knives, or knives with a flat ground edge, like say a Spyderco PM2, don’t really work that well for this task. The convex edge of a Sebenza allows the rounded portion of the edge to slide along the copper, with the actual cutting edge just above the surface of the copper. This removes the insulation without abrading the inner copper core. If I use this technique with a PM2 or similar knife, you can’t so easily ā€œthread the needleā€ between skinning the insulation and biting into the copper, which is a delicate balance.

Scraping the worst of flaking paint off an outdoor unit substation (high voltage transformer and switch combo), so I can wire-brush it and hit it with some cold-galvanizing paint. The results won’t be pretty, but good enough for a winter paint job in a pinch. If the rust gets away on this sort of equipment, water can make its way into the switch compartment, or worse, the transformer oil, and blow the whole thing sky-high. The small 21 Tanto is a brilliant paint scraper. This one sports a home-brew stone wash I put on the slabs years and years ago. A great little knife to have in pocket.
