What do men like???

A friend of mine carries a Kershaw blur every single day and seems to love it. I've held it and used it a little. It's really comfortable in the hand, opens fast, and holds its edge nice. It comes in a bunch of diffrent colors and styles ( like serrated if that's what he would like) it's about 60 USD so about 90 NZD so it should be in your price range

A Buck 110 Anniversary or standard 110 would be a good choice for a traditional "people" friendly knife.
I EDC a 110, no one has ever gone into a panic - or even given me a second glance when I take it out of the sheath to cut something. (note: I am not one of those "clean shaven good boys" in appearance).

The 110 is a great knife, but some find it a little large. If you need something a little smaller, consider the Buck 112. Is there somewhere he can handle both, (along with your other potential choices) to see which he prefers?

Spyderco endura but don't discount the delica. The delica is what I carry to work every day.

Regarding the dragonfly: although the FRN might provide slightly better grip and it's light weight, the G10 version has a more premium feel and I think makes for a better gift. The g10 dragonfly also looks so nice.

A Victorinox Classic SD for his keychain, small but extremely useful. A nice trip to your local store to let him pick out another knife for himself, followed by dinner. A great way to spend the day if you as me.

You mentioned the Endura 4. That would be my choice. Great size/weight combo. It is longer than some of your other choices. I really want one. I carry it's little brother

Spyderco Delica is nice and light. Cuts very well, and is very easy to carry. As others have said, they aren't too scary.

The Buck 110 is a classic. They are much heavier and bigger than the Delica. About the same length as the Endura blade, but much thicker and heavier.

I am not a huge fan of the Leek. My dad loves them. They are solid little knives. In that size range I'd rather the Dragonfly, though.

There are really too many great knives to mention.

If you can get an Opinel in Ebony, I sure love them. And the Ebony, or other exotic wood, with their polished Inox (stainless) steel are great.

I'd be tickled pink to get a surprise knife from my significant other. (Wife).

I also have to say, I love shopping for clothes and shoes for her. I pay attention to what she likes. I go through her fashion magazines and pick out outfits I think she will like, then pay attention to what she picks out.

She can mention there was a new pair of shoes at a store she liked, and I can go in and be confident of picking out the exact pair she is talking about, with absolutely no description. Often based on what outfit I know she wants to match.

It might be a little much, but I would love it if my wife paid any attention to knives, swords, guns, bows, etc, and picked me one out!

Elva826, picking out a knife for someone is really a very, very personal decision. Odds are, he's the only one that really knows what he wants. My recommendation would be to get him an engraved, Alox SAK Classic (inexpensive but classy keychain knife that is very high quality and most here would agree that everyone needs at least one) along with a gift certificate at the local knife store. Not only will he get what he wants but, if he's anything like most of us here, shopping for a knife is almost as enjoyable as using it. Odds are, 20 years down the line, long after he has lost the knife, he will still have and use the Classic.

Chances are that Alox Classic will outlive him and be something his great grand kids can fight over to carry as it's great gramdpa's knife that never left his side all his life. I will definitely side with this idea as being one of the best ones for a knife, everyone needs a keychain knife and this one will easily last a lifetime or two.

Beyond that the idea of taking him knife shopping, maybe without him even knowing could be interesting. Take him out to a knife store and start looking at knives and get him to start looking too and talking about knives and what he wants to get eventually. I actually do this with my girlfriend I take her shopping somewhere and keep an eye out for what catches her eye than we talk about it normally during the day about what she likes/dislikes about it or why she wants it. Latter on when I get a chance I put a note on my computer of what she likes so I can surprise her with it long after she forgot about looking at it.

Hah. good question .
I will PM you a the name of a good and dependable on line dealer who is sadly not on the BF illuminati list.
There you will find Case USA brand penknives which mostly come within budget (oh whoops are you talking NZ dollars smirk smirk hey what am I smirking for I bank aussie dollars) . I think for a special gift
these are much nicer than multi tools which are a useful but totally unromantic gift.
From there you can choose from the quality range of designs ,steel and handle materials. BEEEWWWAAAARRRE-don't select a German branded knife unless its way more than you can afford.
Go for CASE.
hope that helps and they would be NZ legal.

Thanks for your comment - yep I'll definitely go with something that could be exchanged cheers mate!
You could always buy him something at the local knife shop, and make sure of their return policies, so he could exchange it for something else.

Based on the list from your original post:

1. Kershaw Leek Folding Knife Black - I bought one of these for my wife (purple handles). She didn't like the assisted opening. It's not a bad knife but it really doesn't work for me either as something I want to carry.

2. SOG Flash II - quite like the camo handle $ - I know nothing about this brand
3. Spyderco Dragonfly - See below
4. Spyderco Endura4 - Dragonfly is too small for me, Endura is too big. Delica is just right. One of my favorite knives.
5. Buck 110 50th anniversary A classic knife, but they are rather heavy. Definitely need to carry it in the belt sheath. I have one from 1979 that I used to carry. Haven't carried it since about 1990. Just too heavy for what I need.

Very thoughtful comment thanks Rudd, definitely leaning towards the SAK+voucher idea.
