I see gap between liner and scale that bothers me more than filework, which is probably on par with other file work they have done. If not then there is a problem.
I saw the same thing. I'm assuming it's just test fit in the pics and is not yet finished.
FWIW, this was presented to me as a potentially finished build, subject to my approval. In the end I was unhappy with another aspect of it, and the maker responded by scrapping the build, and they want to restart the process from scratch in a couple of months.

Thanks everyone for a very interesting thread. A wide range of polarized responses about the file work. Not what I expected! Overall this makes me want to buy a finished knife in person.

Coming from a "highly respected custom maker" I'd be pissed. If I were paying custom knife money THAT would be unacceptable. It looks very rough/amateur. Like a high school kid did that in metal shop.

I'm curious how opinions stack up among buyers/non-buyers of custom knives, so I added a poll.

Well, I just went through a build with a custom maker. And following along on his instagram there were a few times I was a little concerned with the pics and vids that I looked at. By the time it was done and I saw the pics and video of the finished knife, it looks awesome! Should be delivered to me by mid week!

Don't ever watch the sausages getting made.

Exactly. It's zoomed in, not the best lighting and maybe it's not yet complete.
As I mentioned earlier, this photo was presented to me for approval. So bad lighting and high magnification, yes. But incomplete, no.

For those saying this filework is sub-par, I'd be really interested to see similar photos (at similar magnification!) showing what they deem acceptable.

If it was me I would tell the maker the picture quantity was too low for me to okay.

If there is any doubt there is no doubt.

Well then I would say it needs some refining or start over. Perhaps his eyes aren't what they used to be. But at the same time, it's not terrible.

Ultimately, you are the customer and you must be satisfied.

I voted not acceptable as a buyer of custom knives. The left liner is not enough of a mirror of the right.

File work sucks when it’s done well so .................. in this case :)

I didn’t vote because there was no ....I do buy custom knives but I don’t do filework

Easy enough to see this isn't symmetrical.

The gap in the liner/scale interface bothers me more than the filework. I think of free hand file work as an art form, which is rarely symmetrical. I'm not a fan of file work to begin with.--KV
