What do the reputation points mean?

I tried to do a search, but couldn't find anything. So what do these "points" stand for and how do I get them or get rid of them or whatever I'm supposed to do...?

I've decided to ignore them until they go away.

It just lets people rate your posts... I think you start with 10 points and everytime someone gives you a positive vote, you get another point... they don't like you, and boom, they take a point away... Kinda like a grade school popularity vote. You can go to your control panel and disable them.

What I want to know is where is this "distinguished road" that so many of us are apparently traveling on?
