Ok, I know we all have some pretty cool knives be it custom or production. My question is…what do you really use and why?

Let’s break this into a few categories.
1. EDC at home, work, or in the car.
2. Hiking- Day hiking
3. Backpacking- Remote camping and well established trail with plenty of people.
4. Travel/Work Tools

I will start with listing mine. Feel free to post yours and remember pictures speak louder than words, post em!

1.EDC- My EDC when I am home in the states is simple, a SAK on my keys. Most used item would be the little scissors which I would be lost without. I love the Wenger Traveler because it was my first SAK given to me by my brother in 1997. It has been to the top of the US- Mt Whitney two times and the Grand Canyon as well as a few other states.

2.Hiking- I will always have either my Victorinox Hiker or OHT with me while day hiking. A simple SAK has always been there for me in my time of need. If I am just day hiking, that means I don’t have all my gear so I will usually take a fixed blade along with a SAK. I go between whatever I am working on for a review or I’ll just go with what works. To name a few: RAT RC-3, Breeden CUB, or a JK Hiker. Any of these combined with a SAK and I will be set up if the hike turns into a survival situation.

3.Backpacking- When backpacking places like the Grand Canyon, or Mt Whitney you will be around sometimes hundreds of people so the survival aspect is pretty much nil. In most cases a knife is pretty much useless. Besides, you will have your own shelter and supplies. However, if I am backpacking in a remote area alone or with a friend I forget about whatever I am reviewing or anything new. I go with what has been proven and what I know works without fail. That is when the RC-3/SAK combo is put into effect. Even on survival trips to Peru, Alabama, Mexico, or Philippines, these two always go! I always seem to disappoint fellow survival/knife enthusiasts when they ask me what I use the most in the bush. I actually have grown to like the slow look of disappointment mixed with utter surprise that appears on their face when I pull out my small Vic Hiker.

4.Travel/Work- Victorinox Swiss Champ or Swiss Tool X. Sometime in 1999 I started traveling playing music for artists and nothing beats a Swiss Champ or multi-tool for having on the job. I often use the wire cutters for cutting the wires on my brushes and for cutting bass/guitar strings. The blade quickly shaves off wood splinters that start to protrude off the wood and make the stick unbalanced. The screwdrivers are always used to tighten up drum hardware and stubborn wing nuts. Anyone on stage can use it without having to be “knife literate.” The Swiss Champ has actually been to Mexico, Philippines, Australia, South Pacific, basically 6 continents without any custom officials having a problem with it. I have recently replaced it with the Swiss Tool X as my main travel tool because of the "tool vibe" it gives off, less customs officers question it as they know most photographers and hikers don’t travel without one. Also, the fact that it is not a one handed opening tool makes it legal in almost every part of the world.

Well, here is my list. Maybe it isn't too interesting or original but these are tools that over the years and through the trends have always been what works for me.

Please, feel free to add your own combos!

EDC- currently a Zero Tolerance 0200, previously a Buck/Strider Tarini and an early Benchmade AFCK with Ti liners, and a Spiderco Endura and first model Delica. plus a Leatherman Sideclip and micra.

hiking - same as above.

camping - recently picked up a $10 Rachel Ray kitchen knife that came with a blade guard for the camp kitchen box. it's orange so odds of losing it are slim, and the guard is nice when it gets thrown in the box and lugged around with some of the other junk, even tho the utensils are all separate.

work- they don't get used much any more, but i have a pair of X-acto Super #1s with the QR toggle at the butt that i used to use for work. the QR made changing blades much quicker than the standard knives.

Good stuff Reuben. Although I always seem to be playing with a new knife or two, these are the ones that I have mainly settled on.

For edc, either the BM mini Bone Collector or the Emerson mini A100. Both are compact, but stout and I searched a long time to find the perfect folder (but found two)

My trusty Sierra Scout is my go to warhorse. It's seen the most hiking and backpacking trips of all my knives. Love everything about this one and usually even when I'm aking out a new blade to play with, this one comes along too.

This knife that I had Ray make for me also goes hiking with me quite a bit.

Another one from Ray that is designed as a stout but lightweight backpacking knife. This is an old pic, the 1095 blade is pretty much black now!

I always post new knives as I get them, but these have all been used the most and probably always will be.

My EDC around the office
I work outdoors so the office (DNR state building) rarely sees me.

My two EDC's around town/home/whenever I want a nicer folder. Pics are several years old when they were new.

When I'm backpacking I always have my BRKT golok. Fist pic was soon after I got it but the second pic shows the 100% natural patina from a couple seasons of hard work clearing trails.

I rotate a few other so they don't feel left out:D but these are my "standards".

My EDC is a Benchmade 550 and a SAK tinker I carry these two every where I go. I don't really have a hiking knife yet, looking around for a good necker and maybe an RC-3.

Cool thread!

I just traded for a Benchmade Bone Collector thats getting the bulk of my pocket carry time now. It works great for everything from processing apples to fire prep, although the jury's still out on the "ribs" in the handle. For an extended carving session it seems like they might offer too much "grip".

I used to carry a smaller (office/town) knife in my pocket with a small fixed blade in my satchel. I decided since I didn't always have my man purse on me, that I'd just replace them both with a sturdier folder.

Outside the house working or knocking around in the woods behind the house, I've been carrying my Koyote Stead knife paired with my trusty Vic Farmer. This is a really sweet little blade that's legal (under 3.5" blade) for concealed carry in WV, comes in handy when I need to run to the hardware store or something.

My JK Anniversary Knife is my hunting knife again paired with a Farmer or a Leatherman Wave. This knife has about a 4.75" blade that when paired with the long handle chops really well for its size. The dropped edge and subdued point make it very nice for working up venison after the kill. Very nice all around knife.

I've been toting this Bark River Snowy River one hiking trips for a few years. Its really light for a 4" knife and has held up well to quite a bit of real world use/abuse. I've got a Fiddleback recluse on order that will definately give this one a run for its money.

Any of these fixed blades could fill alot of the same roles (and have). This is just how I justify (to myself) the need to have multiple blades in the same size range.

I also keep a Leatherman Wave in my satchel for random repairs.

mtwarden,

Is that fruit punch in your platty? I thought I was the only one who did that on the trail. If so, you have good taste.

And so as not to completely ruin this thread, I'll tell you all what I use and why. Sorry I don't have pics. For EDC I generally carry my Izula, Leatherman Charge, and Leatherman Micra. For camping/hiking, I add my RC-3 to those already mentioned, as well as my HI M-43. Some days I sub my Condor Golok and C&S axe for the M-43.

I have been carrying three folders usually, sometimes just one of the three, for EDC. Usually a large one hand folder, a smaller one hand folder and a SAK or multi blade slipjoint. Lately, I have been getting a lot of use out of my Victorinox farmer and huntsman. The alox handles are grippy for me. I haven't been able to kick my Spyderco Bob T slipit out of my pocket either. I have been going through different folders to fill out my large EDC category, and have been alternating between my Manix 2 and Benchmade 710. Out of all three, I use the SAKs the most. I work in the city, but live in the country. Fixed blades are a little more kosher in the country, and I have been carrying either a Gossman micro Kephart or NWA mini Scout on my belt.

For hiking, I usually take my One Hand Trekker or Soldier. I always have my OHT in my car, the Soldier is usually at home. The Soldier has a beefier handle for me, I like it better. For day hikes, or, more likely for me, morning or afternoon hikes, I like the utility of the OHT. I also throw one of my Alox SAKs in my pocket, and if I am going to be gone all day, I toss my Gossman micro Kephart into the mix. If it is a short hike or walk near home, I just have a Spyderco FFG Endura for IWB carry, very comfortable that way. I just got an NWA mini Scout in a trade, and that has been getting a lot of pocket carry. My Blind Horse boat tail scandi is another great user.

For backpacking, I have not gone on an extended backpacking trip lately, but would really like to. For short camping excursions, I have taken my NWA Woodsman, and my Gossman Kephart, along with my Snow and Nealley Hudson Bay axe. I have a good amount of custom bushcraft style blades to cycle through, and I am still finding out what fits best.

For work knives, nothing can beat my old Kutmaster stockman, with delrin scales and carbon steel blades; and my Gossman PSK. Very useful. I have been including a 550 Griptilian with the old oval hole, or a Spyderco Native III into the mix. The Native III is a workhorse.
