Here’s what I’ve been working on lately, my first attempt at a knife from scratch. It started life as a Nicholson Black Diamond file. I wanted something that was big bad and sharp. Convex grind with green and black marble powder coat; the handle is wrapped with leather lace then beeswax was melted into it with a heat gun. Let me know what you think.

always a lil off,
Doug

Sweet...and made by your own hand to boot!

The first of many I think...

Nice clean lines and design.

Now...start thinking about slabs for the handle. They're not hard to do, and obviously you have the skill.

Then, you can make a sheath...takes time, but quite of few folks have made beautiful ones, some while watching TV and chatting with the family.

Then, you can give some consideration to the name of your line of knives.

Then, there must be an old store front or small factory in your area that you can set up the manufacturing process.

Then, get a loan from the local chamber of commerce, or change your name to something female, hispanic/innuit/native american and apply for a small business loan.

then...er....ok, get back to me on the next step.

Very nice work.

I was thinking about leaving it naked for now (no slabs) and maybe I'll try my hand at a kydex sheath for it.

Very nice, I like it. It kinda reminds me of my issue knife in the service. A shape that is very useful. and strong. :)

I like it.

Do you want to slab handle before the kydex sheath? (wont the handles change the throat design?)

not for sale jai it's bad luck:)...................i think? think of USMC K-Bar on roids. found a nice supply of old files in a garage it's going to keep me busy for quite sometime. The only thing that bugs me are the plunge cut, they're not quite symetrical.

Of course you can always email me at doconnell at accmail dot net if you want:)

Very, very nice looking! I'm very impressed by the blade, although the wrapping is quite acceptable as well. Way nicer than my first file knife:

It's all alot of fun, and immensely satisfying though, aint it?

i like the simple rggedness of the puukko, i think i'll try one next. I think it's a great way to focus one's awareness because it gives you a better understanding of just how hard it is to get it right.

Ain't that the truth! I have nothing but great respect for established knife-makers!

Nice work, by the way!

Looks like a professional job to me. Could you elaborate further on the powder coat? I have tried bake-on epoxy with good results but that stuff you put on looks great.

My buddy did it for me, it's an electric powder coating gun that he got for christmas. the process is similar to the oven cure gun-kote. spray it on bake in the oven for 20 min then let cool. i don't know how well this process will hold up to abuse (i haven't throughly tested it) probably like any other powder coated knife i've used they always seem to wear from the edge back either from sharpening or normal hacking and slashing.

Great looking cutter, you have caught the knifemaking bug for sure. Go to Tandy, get some leather and fit up a sheath. Then you will have a hard time keeping it off of your belt.
