What do yall think of this knife.

I like the blade shape a lot. I'm not a fan of the end of the handle though with that big beak like thing sticking out. I tend to vary my grip up quite a bit and it seems like that would get in the way.

It would, however, allow for a lot more secure grip.

That is a first time seeing that knife for me so I'd be interested in seeing if anyone has it and maybe some more pics.

Its a classic of the Kabar line-up. Many people go for the long heavy bowie with a 9.5" blade. A real workhorse. Not very delicate, but often considered one of the best bangs for the buck in the chopper class. A search on bladeforums will generate hundreds of testimonies in favor of the kabar heavy bowies.

I've always liked the knife, but I think it is a big too thick and heavy for a survival knife unless you plan on chopping wood with it all day.

You may want to get something with a thinner profile so it will be more useful for cutting tasks.

i think spookey has one. not 100% on that.

i've handled one in store and it felt like a very stout knife. fits quite nicely into the bang for your buck category. the one thing i hated about it was the sheath. personally if i was to buy one i'd get a kydex sheath made for it. other then that looks like a champ.

please post some review pics when u get it

cheers

I ordered a Ka-Bar Hunter last week. Found a smokin' deal on one.

My father and Brother have heir-loom hunters. I have always wanted one. AUS-8 and a comfy handle. You really can't beat it.

Yup, I've got the full size version. It's my 'go to' for a large chopper in 'knife' form. It's really quite a fantastic blade, and I wouldn't feel at all undergunned if it was all I had with me.

Takes a really good edge (the full flat grind helps a lot), to lame guard to get in the way so it's very easy (and comfortable) to choke up on for fine work. A distal grip gives really strong chopping power.

Like I said, I've got the full size version, and if I were wanting a true chopper I'd opt for this length versus the one you pictured.

I've got some pics around somewhere...

Edited to add:
The becker line-up (now also made my kabar) is a fantastic value as well, comes in similar size classes as those two of the heavy bowie. I haven't compared the two in work so I can't comment on them comparatively...

I have a friend who has the larger one, and he has nothing but good things to say about it.

And I have another friend who has the cutlass version, and he likes it.

They are good knives.

I found that the beak really helps in chopping with my ka-bar khuk. It holds on to your hand, much more than the CS khuk.

Nice knife. I wish they would switch to a metal butt cap for hammering like most of the Kabar USMC knives.

My honest opinion is that you'd be better off with the standard kabar USMC. The beak is nie for chopping holds and not much else, and truth is if you want a PURE chopper, there's better choices.

spookypistolero did you have a kydex sheath made for that knife. If so i would love to see a pic of it .

Like the knife.... not fond of the sheath.... why would they place a swivel point under the retaining straps? not a good design IMO.... but what do i know.

The sheath isn't at all perfect, but it's still very decent. If you're in the middle of regular use and don't want to snap the knife in, you don't have to - with the blade length and snug fit it's not going anywhere. Then the swivel comes in handy.

Or put another way, I'm not unhappy enough with it to spend what I paid for the knife on a new sheath.
