Made this one up and dry fitted it, just thought I'd see what everyone's opinion was. Handle is octagonal sculpted maple burl, darkened with 8 coats of dark walnut danish oil, guard stainless steel, blade is O-1, cutting edge 13 1/4", OAL is 20 3/4". I'll refrain from calling it any specific Japanese names as it is only loosely based on such :D

Where's the balancing point at? I don't know much about swords, but that looks freaking cool!

Thanks, Sam!

Balance point is just in front of the guard for now, when I add the epoxy it will probably be right at the guard. It swings nice...well, as much as I can without the handle letting go (thank God for the dog it's a tight fit!).

Lovely shape and one beautiful piece of handle material also.

I might have added something in the way of color contrast, right behind the guard. I think it would add a lot to the knifes overall look. Thats just me, of course.

A beauty any way you look at it.

Fred,

I'm contemplating peening in some round brass rod into the guard (inlay style) of varying diameter and maybe I could do a brass plate the on the front of the handle. Not a huge fan of brass, would prefer copper, but don't have any copper rod. Thank you for the compliments!

I think it looks great, Keeping something that long straight after quenching is an art in itself!

I wish I could take credit for that but I outsource to Peters' for my HTing. :o The definitely do a dang great job though!

Not sure, I want say at 500. But yes, I just tell them what I'm looking for as a final RC and they shoot for it as close as they can. They did a temper for 56 - 58 RC according to the paperwork that came back. It's got a nice flex and spring to it. If all works out, I'll show it to you at Ashokan.

I like the overall piece. I agree that something behind the guard could add to the appeal of it. I personally don't like the guard shape. The octogon shape doesn't appeal to me. I'm not sure why though. Maybe it will look better to me with a contrast of a different material between the guard and handle. I'm thinking that a more rounded look might provide a contrast with the octogon shaped handle material. It's just a personal preference of mine though. The blade shape and handle length looks great to me!

Nice work!!

I was thinking that something in front of the guard like brass, or bronze would finish it off nicely.

I really like your style, man! Nicely done.

I think the guard needs rounding out, and maybe something, brass or bronze, maybe copper infront of the guard. Don't know, do know it's very cool, and that wood is outstanding. I also know grinding a long blade is a pain.

Nice Eric!
Heres my 2 cents on the guard... what about grinding it flush with the handle and making it "guardless"?

Thats it!!! I had reservations about the guard design in my post, but wasn't sure how to make it appeal to me. I think that's the ticket Mace!!!
