What Do You Carry On To An Airplane?

Last week some clown was reported to have tried to hijack a plane armed with a nail clipper. 3 ounces of mouthwash is fine, but a 4 ounce bottle means you are a potential terrorist. Carry a mini SAK on your key ring and it winds for sale up on eBay. I almost never check baggage, espically now that it’ll cost more than a day’s car rental, so every flight seems to mean less and less stuff. This is not necessarily a bad thing, except that I keep having to make choices about what is going to be in my pockets next trip.

I figure I am not the only one dealing with this. So I am curious: aside from business stuff and clothes, what personal items do you carry on a plane these days?

I almost never fly, so the very real inconveniences for the modern air traveller don't bother me much. If I was doing it often, I would hate it.

I carry a pouch around my neck with my wallet, keys, a very small flashlight and a pen and maybe a notepad. That way, I don't have to empty my pockets, I just toss the pouch on the x-ray belt. I also carry one or two paperback novels and if I think of it earplugs.

I fly once every quarter to once every couple months.

I rarely if ever check luggage -- even before airlines started charging for it. So aside from clothes, reading material, and the stuff I need for work (laptop, camera, digital recorder, batteries, chargers, cables, notepad, pens, etc.), I usually only take an iPod and an LED flashlight of some kind -- either the triple-A or keychain variety.

Incidentally, I have carried nail clippers multiple times in my toiletries kit and will continue to do so. Small scissors got pulled off me at LaGuardia airport here in NYC shortly after 9/11 -- but that's the only incident of that kind I've ever had with regard to personal items getting confiscated.

I checked a Victorinox Cadet in my girlfriend's bag on a personal trip to FL once (she was not happy about that, even though it was without incident). Otherwise, no tools--edged or otherwise--for me, ever.

My brother gave me an old Spyderco Cricket last year, which I keep at his house to carry when I visit. I'm working on stashing a pocket knife at my parents' house, too, for when I'm down visiting them.

I like your stash method, lol. Very wise young grasshopper.

I used to travel a lot hiring people for theme parks. First stop I would make would be to the local target or walmart and pic up a cheap sak, usually a spartan or cadet. Used it while I was there and would usually gift it to the manager I hired, or one my contacts in the park. If they didn't want it, I would find a janitor in the park and give it to him. No real money out of my pocket since it was per diem money and usually made a friend out of it.

Not carrying a knife while on vacation is a real drag. Couple weeks ago in San Antonio, I bought a new knife then went to mail it home as I refuse to check bags too. The post office had a security checkpoint. They had to call another guard and hand deliver my knife to the postal worker who put it into the package to mail home. Ridiculous!!! I'll probably go the SAK route and give it away next time. OK back on topic.

I carried a empty widemouth insulated Klean Kanteen through security, they never gave it a second look. filled it up as soon as I was through security and took it onto the plane. Most hotels will give you razors, all you need to do is ask. Really I just carried my normal EDC load, I just removed things like SAK, Kubaton/pen, leatherman micro, etc. Honestly, My wife usually overpacks, I was happy to fly for vacation so I didn't have to lug her pillows, favorite blanket, hairdryer (in case the hotel doesn't have one) and beach towels. (why she can't just use 2 hotel towels to cover her chair when sunbathing is beyond me.)

Other than clothes, meds and travel toothepaste in a ziploc, and an extra pair of shoes, I didn't carry much....cash, you should always carry cash. (hidden in an under the shirt or inside the pants extra wallet.)

Grizz

Anyone brave enough to sneak one of these bad boys in your carry on?

100% non metallic.

This is almost cheating...

Are you asking if anyone here breaks the law, or are you offering suggestions for illegal behavior and letting idiots know where to get stuff???

Just pointing out how easy it is to get weapons on planes even with all the security...If some one wanted to bad enough there is a good chance they can. I really don't see any point in not allowing knives on planes. Guns I can see but not knives.

They have huge cockpit doors that stay closed now so it is not possible to do what happened on that fateful day.

Thanks for your input though.

That's a great technique. I do it with a used water bottle all the time. Put it through the scanner empty -- fill it up once on the other side. Saves waste and money.

You can carry Bic- or Gilette-type razors on a plane without a problem. At least I do.

The fact that the knife was free and already where I needed it was the best part.

Mom has an old trapper slip joint of my grandfather's that he carried since he was a kid. I'm hoping she'll find it and that can be my knife when at the parents' house.

Those still show up on the x-ray machine and will definitely show up on the millimeter wave scanner. plus they are illegal to carry on a plane.

Gee: I'll bet those dumb a$$s at TSA never even heard of them plastik things........... "we" sure are lots smarter then them and kin git our plastik weapons past any ol' sekurity...........

I fly every other week and racked up >200k miles last year. I keep a couple SAK's in my most frequest destinations ( can't stand to be without a pocket knife) and the typical toiletries. Razor, nail nippers and small pair of cuticle scissors for my beard. I had the scissors taken in Beijing last year but they let me through with them the other 4 times...go figure. I like the idea of gifting a Sak when at a new place.... I can see where that could make a friend or two.

Why do you think the airports have these now? Plastic weapons.

I bet you were one of the paranoids who championed to get the millimeter wave scanner in every airport.

Actually you probably opt for a full cavity search.

And just for the record if you want a weapon on a plane bad enough your going to get it on a plane...

But please keep laughing and living in you safe little bubble. I just like to look at the reality of things.

I only travel on an aircraft if I am on business travel when there is a dire need for me to be on site personally. So I check my bag (which contains a knife) and let the company pay for it. If the company bitches about it, they can bloody well not send me. I do not like to travel. Depending on where I am going, I can usually carry a knife once I'm out of the security area. So I do.

For carry-on I carry a pouch with my emergency allergy meds and a small flashlight.
I do not carry illegal items in my carry-on. It makes life much easier.

I travel a lot. Back and forth between Mexico City and Baja California.
I keep a basic kit in my lock box in the cars we have over there. A multy tool, flash light, knife, ammo, sas urban survival tin, etc.
The only things I take on the plane whit me are my dead man’s finger control device and mini streamlight. If I need a weapon on the plane I just roll up one of the magazines they have on board, and it becomes a very nasty impact weapon.

FWIW here in NZ the law prohibits, among other things, "Knives, both real and ceremonial knives, with blades of more than 6cm, made of metal or any other material strong enough to be used as a potential weapon." So I can legally carry the Vic Classic SD that is on my keyring, which is nice. Along with a flashlight, a resuscitation mask, glasses, book.

Flashlight is really useful when I (or other people drop stuff and it is lost on the plane floor).
