What Do You Carry On To An Airplane?

On my last flight, I had a CamelBak Daxio for carry-on. Empty, of course. Inside it, I had:

2 RITR notebooks
2 Fisher Space pens
1 Adventure Medical 1-2 man kit
1 Leatherman SuperTool 300
1 Gerber Tempo
1 Brunton Headlamp
1 Garmin GPS
1 Digital Camera
1 Astronomy Wheel
1 Map thinger (I forget what it's called)
1 I-pod
1 SureFire G2
1 Brunton Compass
1 Personal Hygeine Kit
2 textbooks
1 Toshiba Satellite
1 Columbia Packable Jacket
My last trip was for an ecology class in Portland. I still don't know how they missed the SuperTool. I had forgotten about it until I got to my hotel. I checked it on the way back.

As far as bringing weapons of any sort on a plane, if I need one that dang bad I will find some way to improvise. Break a tray...something. But I will not risk imprisonment for the little bit of security I would get from a plastic knife in my bag.

I have carried a Mosquito Tactical Pen aboard an aircraft in my carry on bag a couple of times. X-rayed, but not commented on or seized.

Then I saw someone go through security with what looked like a Leatherman Squirt and he was led off into the "private room" by the airport police, no doubt to be subjected to various indignities.

Now the TacPen stays at home.

I have a Leatherman Micra from which I removed the blade. I carry it when I fly (all my recent trips have been carry on baggage only) so I'll at least have something on my person. TSA gives me a slight hassle almost every time but once they are convinced the blade is gone I am on my way. I hope I don't meet up with the same agent that other guy did.

I’ll be doing some more flying this next year in my new job. I’m Active Army but I still prefer to dress casual and not in uniform. I usually check luggage (no charge for use mil-guys) and have just started traveling with my pistol (of course to CCW compatible states). I have decent load-out on my checked uniform, but for carry on, I’ve had my Swiss Tech Utilikey on my key chain. I actually just always forget to take it off.

I too fly with a smaller stainless water bottle…empty until I get through the body groping. I’ve flown with a combo firesteel, sharpener (and I think it has the magnesium imbedded in the wooden handle as well?). Some 550 cord, impact pen (tactical?), LED light, cravat/bandana, Bic lighter, small FAK and of course some decent leather gloves.

I think a small pair of scissors would be a good idea if you can find some inexpensive ones if they get confiscated. I’ve also thought about getting small leather pouch with some obsidian arrow heads…make it look like a tourist shop purchase. If I can get a couple of cheap ones, I’ll try it out. I just haven’t found anything against “artifacts”; they down allow modern arrows or arrowheads…I wonder if a token or artifact would fly if in your coin purse?

I travel quite a bit and I want to be safe when I get to my destination. So---- I must check a bag which means I can carry almost anything i need to. Gun knife etc.

Thanks for that TSA list, Blademaster (#26). Bookmarked, and a current copy printed out and in the carryon.

I don't travel extensively anymore, and usually checked my bag as it was for work. For my carry on, other than work gear such as the laptop, folders, etc, a AAA Maglite always came with me. I constantly and accidentally dropped stuff on night flights back, so it worked out much better than my phone or ipod. I also used the empty water bottle trick frequently, filling up once I was past security.

Since I was on the road 4-5 days a week, I brought a LMF Spork (fork on one side, spoon on the reverse, with some serration along one of the fork tines. In retrospect, I'm surprised this actually made it past security) and a Sea to Summit collapsible bowl were awesome for those times I didn't want to eat out. I have a P-38 in my wallet that never raised any flags, either.

I travel a lot. Back and forth between Mexico City and Baja California.
I keep a basic kit in my lock box in the cars we have over there. A multy tool, flash light, knife, ammo, sas urban survival tin, etc.
The only things I take on the plane whit me are my dead man’s finger control device and mini streamlight. If I need a weapon on the plane I just roll up one of the magazines they have on board, and it becomes a very nasty impact weapon.

"Terrorist plot foiled by Sky Mall." Haha. Priceless.

My mom is a flight attendant and I fly for free most times and I would be connected to her name on a flight pass and if I where to get caught trying to sneak a knife through security she could lose her job. So a knife on a plane would not be worth the risk.

Gloves w carbon fibre/plastic knuckle protection also can be quite a nasty prolonged use striking weapon that bypasses machine scans, also unless you are a skilled brawler in confined spaces you cannot disarm someone with them on.

In my carry on.

G-Shock 6900
Citizen Nighthawk
Quark AA Tac
Quark 2AA body with Eneloops in it
Pencil/pen
Laptop/charger
Headphones
Phone/phone charger
RC magazines (knife magazines aren't received well on planes)
Jacket/spare change(s) of underwear (necessary for carry on, you never know when they'll lose luggage)
Beef jerky/CLIF bars/gum
Deodorant/toothbrush/toothpaste/dental floss
Hat/sunglasses
Sunblock/chapstick/nail clippers/kleenex

I think that's it.

That's what I just unpacked in the hotel room a few nights ago from just my carry on. I guess I'm OCD, I just like to have a little bit of everything in my carry on. If worst comes to worst, it's enough to where I could last a couple of days without luggage with the stuff I pack in my carry on. Aside from clothes and my razor it's basically everything I need on vacation.

"RC magazines (knife magazines aren't received well on planes."

Who cares what they think? No offense, but that is stupid.

I have multiple hobbies and knives are just one of them. Racing RC cars is another hobby and rather than having to deal with people gawking or staring, it's easier to just read my RC magazines. I wish I could say "who cares", but on a flight it's sometimes easier to just go with the flow and not try to bring any attention to myself.

I carry an ipod, a big fat magazine, and enough Xanax to not care if we crash, get hijacked, or the guy in the seat way too close to me leans back putting his headrest in my lap.

"Homeland Security" does their best to limit our movement, and the airline industry uses this to their advantage to treat us like cattle without us complaining lest we lose our privilege to fly. The only way for me to deal with this is fly as little as possible, and chemical restraint if I absolutely have to.
