What do you carry

I know the answer will change from person to person, as well as what area you are in. I know a lot of people who say they can get by with a SAK, and I have a few close friends who do. My question is, what do you carry for a day hike, and then what do you carry for a 3-5 day trip. Pictures are always welcomed.

I tend to carry my Fehrman Thru Hiker as a neck knife either way. I also will bring a 4" belt knife either way. When going out for multipal days I add a 19" axe in my pack and my pocket chainsaw. I add my 8" Laconico if i know I will have a good amount of batoning to do in camp, or sub it for my RAT RC6.

I know I could get by with a lot less, but this seems to be what I end up bringing. I may try and lose the axe and add a good folding saw like a Silky or Bacho Laplander, but that is undecided as of now.

There are also times that I bring 5 or 6 knives out for testing, to see side by side where thier strengths and weakness lies while working side by side, but that isnt as often as I would like anymore.

P.S. Also, what knives do you tend to always grab, what are your favorites. Lets add all to this, which axes, knives, saws, and so on.

I've been know to hump in 40 lbs of knives for kicks and giggles.

but mostly i carry a big chopper, a medium chopper, and a smaller blade for smaller tasks. I always have my Belt Kit PSK on me, in addition to my woods bumbling bag or pack.

the basics are covered, shelter, fire starting, food, water, FAK, signalling, light, navigation, etc etc.

Fixed Blades:
Big Chopper - Ka-Bar Kukri Machete (11.5" Blade, 20oz)
Little Chopper - BK7
Utility knife - Ontario cheapie with 4" blade

Folding Blades:
Ontario RAT-1
Endura 4

Multi tools:
Leatherman Wave
Victorinox Cybertool

The multi tools are my EDC so I always have them with me anyway, the rest are mainly just for camping. I keep them all sharp and I'll probably take my DMT aligner with me from now on so I can touch up any blades that need it.

Oops, I did forget multitools, i always have a leatherman wave with me.

Bushman, that belt PSK is sweet. Have you ever done a writeup on that kit, showing everything you carry in it?

Here goes:

Everyday, everywhere, all the time: My nameless EDC scandi fixed blade, which fits comfortably in my front pocket:

When I'm out hiking, I throw on my Spec-Ops sheath, which has a Leatherman Wave in the utility pouch and holds my JK Anniversary Knife:

And lately, when I hit the trails for an extended period (3-5 days +), I add my JK Hudson Bay 7" as a chopper:

Also, I have added a JK fire kit to my EDC, with a mini version of my Hudson Bay:

And, lest this appear to be one extended advert for JK Knives, here's a shot of my BK-9, which is my go-to knife for heavy work in the woods (chopping, trail clearing, etc):

All the best,

I've done a 9-day backpack with as little as a SAK One-Handed Trekker. However, I've also done some shorter distance 3-4 day packs with 6-8 edged items. Sort of depends upon my needs, fitness level, and mood.:o

On a one day hike, I tend to grab a SAK or an other one of the smaller knives, like the Buck 450RD, EKA Swede 88 or Opinel nr 8.

On longer hikes and camping, I also take a larger knife with me. One of my Mora's or the EKA Swede 60.

G'day dbltap

Day trips I carry a Fallkniven H1 fixed blade & a Fallkniven TK3 folder.

For multi day trips, I carry the GB mini in addition to the H1 & TK3

Kind regards

For long trips it's probably a mora/puukko, 18-20" axe, possibly a bahco saw and always a SAK (Hiker without scales) in my pocket should I lose my sheath knife. You could drop any two of these and I would be pretty happy still.

Day hikes will probably involve the mora and a SAK or even the whole line if I'm out to work on some skills.

For dayhikes i rotate between a Gerber Gator II, Fallkniven F1, Becker Necker or RAT Izula.

Pics of the Bk11, Izula and Gator II.

Longer trips i either go for Ontario TAK or the Fallkniven F1 paired with a multitool of some sorts. Aint got no pics of the F1 yet.

In the end it all comes down to season, terrain and mood.

I have only been using the same two fixed and a SAK for awhile now. The smaller one is my EDC with my SAK,so they will already be in my pockets.

Most times I will add the larger Hiker to my belt when I head out. The little Wetterlings is kept in my bag.

Bahco Laplander saw, Busse FBM as my big knife, Scrap Yard Knives Yard Keeper for my small knife, J.Neilson B.U.K. for my necker and my new addition of a Normark Super Swede for my folder.

Sadly no pics at the moment, camera is dead and got none on my phone.

I am also one of those guys who carries more steel into the woods than I could ever use. Each trip I rotate blades through to see if one of my blades should be sold on due to me not having a use for it or not liking the way it performs. 2010 I need to be more selective if i'm to keep from putting my back out dragging an even larger daysack full of blades into the woods.

For a day hike, I'll bring a vic trecker. For a multi-day back-packing trip, I'll add a Mora and a folding saw. If I'm just camping, I'll add a GB forest ax and hatchet.

My around home EDC is a SAK either a Farmer or my Huntsman Plus and a folder, normally a Spyderco Endura.

In the bush for a day hike I carry a machete (16 inch Tramontina,13 inch SAICO, or a 12 inch Ontario) and a Mora of one type or another, plus the SAK Huntsman. If I'm going to an area with lots of tall grass I'll put an 18 or 20 inch Tramontina on my pack.

If I'm going to be out for a few days I normally add in a Tramontina folding saw, and swap the Mora for my Skookum Bush Tool. When I take out a group for a few days since there will be five of us I like to vary the machetes they carry. I try to give them a choice so they figure out what works for them. They all get a machete and a Mora. Mac

Day hikes:
SAK Farmer or
Wenger Mike Horn Ranger or
whatever slipjoint I'm rockin' that day

Multi Day hikes:
Eddie White 8" OAL fixed with orange handles or
Scrap Yard Dumpster Mutt or
Blackjack Trail Guide

EDC
I always have a small fixed in my pocket. For the past month its been my Gossman PSK which I dont see myself getting away from anytime soon. Perfect size, O1 steel, crazy sharp convex. I put a patina on it awhile back with apple cider vinegar, and havent had any issues with rust at all(its scale less). Great blade. I destroyed the original Kydex in a car wreck recently, and in no time Scott sent me a really nice OD green Kydex pocket sheath. (Thanks again Scott!)

I also carry a multitool. Either on my person or in my bag. For the last year its been a Vic Spirit. I gave it to my nephew over Thanksgiving, since he was knifeless, and ordered me a new one. Again, I dont see this changing any time soon. Its the best Ive used in a multitool. Ive had a Leatherman Surge, Kick, Charge, and Juice. Also a powerlock from SOG. I prefer the Vic. Stainless, good selection of tools, comfortable to use, and very well made.

Woods Use
In the woods for an overnighter or a long hike, I pack my usual EDC kit, and add a good fixed blade. Ive used about every knife imaginable. Customs, production, you name it. Through my experiance with cutlery, Ive found that a good sturdy fixed blade with a 3.75-4in blade of Carbon steel (My favorite is A2) is the knife I prefer to pack. I like a 4.5in handle. I have a Gossman I designed to fill this role for me in 2010, but this year, its been whatever I have at the moment. The Gunny from BRKT got the most play this year. I also have an RC3 that sees some use, but lately has been delegated to the glovebox.

In the woods for a quick hike, or materials gathering I usually just bring my EDC of a pocket fixed blade/multitool. Sometimes a med fixed blade or specialized tool, depending on what Im doing.

Backpacking and extended trips in the woods Ill pack a multi in the pack, small fixed blade in pocket, and 4in fixed on belt or packstrap. Plus whatever specialized tool I might need. I have done a few extended trips with just a SAK and small fixed blade in my life and faired very well.

Specialty tool

Axe, machete, or saw. Whatever I need for the trip. I have an Okapi machete that has served well for the past few seasons, but I see a Condor in my future. I have an Estwing hatchet that gets the hatchet play occasionally, but really not all that often.
I prefer more times then not to toss my Corona folding saw in the pack. Ive used it ALOT, and its still kicking. Great saw I picked up at Lowes....
