What do you collect?

but when a knife "sings to me" I usually buy it no matter what it is.

That pretty much sums me up. Funny how you can see certain items and they do nothing for 'ya. Then you see something else, and it gets into your head and stays there until you have to own it.

I'm an accumulator. Have some safe queens and about 5 users that I rotate. I guess I categorize them. I like to have a beater, a trusty friend, something for a special occasion, etc...

OMG! I just realized that I'm accessorizing like a woman! HELP!:)

I'm not a collector, but my favorite knives that I've seen so far are folders from (in alphabetical order) Scott Cook, Tom Mayo, and Kirby Lambert. I'm still shocked that you can easily buy Kirby Lambert knives directly from a dealer without significant markup, and I'm even more shocked that his order book is still open! In my opinion, the fit and finish is superior to that of one of the more popular knives on this forum in the same price range, and his knives are as tough as they come.

Here's a pic of my current collection (it's very small, but I've had many more than are shown in the picture. the flat medium TNT is now sold since I had to buy that textured skinner!):

I'm something of a collectors, or perhaps more accuratly an "accumulator" as some others have said. I certainly have more knives than I really need. I find knives in general interesting, so my "accumulation" is rather broad and unfocused.

Modern Pocket Knives - Benchmades, Kershaws, and especially Spydercos. All various types of stainless, with pocket clips and thumb holes, studs, or some kind of AO. These all see regular use as EDC.

Outdoor Knives - Bark River, Marbles, Cold Steel, Case and a few customs. Fixed blades, in a mix of stainless and carbon steel. Mostly in the 4-5 inch range but a few larger and smaller. These see regular use on camping trips or weekend outings.

Slip Joints - Mostly Case, with a couple other brands. Traditional patterns, lots of carbon steel and a few stainless. Sizes ranging from Peanuts to big folding Hunters. Again, these are all users, some as weekday EDC some as weekend carry.

Tactical - A fuzzy term I admit but these are all fighting and combat knives. Cold Steel, CRKT, Gerber, Boker, Ka-Bar, etc. Bowies, Daggers, Tantos, and a few more exotic designs. These are the only one's I really don't consider "users" (as I seldom get into knife fights) but have always had a certain facination for me.

I collect Al Mar and Spyderco. And to a lesser degree Schatt & Morgan, Moki, Mcusta, G Sakai, Chris Reeve. I have two Spyderco's I use for EDC. About 250 knives total.

Not really a collector, but the largest amount of knives in my posession are Victorinox.

I try to buy whatever catches my interest, so "accumulator" is probably accurate. I don't buy for investment purposes.

My "high-end" thirst was recently sated, so right now my interest is in trying out new scales and such for those knives. Far easier on the ol' pocketbook.

Knives? Mostly production Benchmades, and not all see use. I've a mix of older and newer models and seek out the early ones when I can. Not new to knives though, used to collect Schrade, Camillus, and Buck folders before going the modern route.

I have to admit to being a bit of a collector. I'm waiting for the arrival of my third Griptilian. I have bought a few knives over the years simply because I liked them or they felt good in my hand. One of my Grips is an OD Green handle and coated blade, and I have to say I just got it because I liked it.

I've collected mostly folders, but more fixed-blades lately. Not all of my knives have a defined purpose. That said, I have carried or used most of my knives at one time or another and they have the dings and scratches to prove it.

I buy what I like, but two of each -- one to use, and one for the safe.

This approach, however, can get expensive fast!!
