what do you do to test out your new knives?

I do some limbing. This one wasn't quite sharp enough...

Beckerhead #42

Should have used a 9.

First thing i do is sharpen them. I have never gotten a knife that was up to my standards, sorry. Then , i usually collect a bunch of new ones, then take them all out at once to test them. You can really tell which one is better than others, for certain types of use. I like all of mine. Some are certainly better at some things than others. Kinda like your kids. You love them all, but they have different interests.

Make a fire. Start with a log, make a bowdrill kit, baton everything down to the sizes I want, light it, burn it, drink a beer or whiskey and admire the blade. I've gotten so many blades lately, I can't do that with all of them. I wouldn't have any trees left in the yard.

cut up some wood - make small sticks, shavings, feathersticks, etc...
then build a fire
wipe blade down, check for chips/rolls
food prep
cook meat on fire
cut meat into bite sized pieces after it's cooked

if the knife does all this without causing hot spots or other problems, it's a keeper.
if not, then either the handle gets sanded to fit, it gets loaned out, or it gets sold/traded.

I'd like to be able to do these kindsa tests, but I think I'll leave it to the pro's!

Haha, good call MWTIC. Thanks for that.

I check to see how it feels in hand, then I check the edge with paper or some kitchen work. Then I see what kind of knife it is and what I bought it for and use it accordingly (There's always some excuse for me getting a new toy. Lately it's zombies, because... You never know, I mean it's zombies, why take chances...) Some people are fans of cutting down the largest tree in the forest with a herring... And that's all fine and good. I like the right tool for the job. BK-14? Food prep. BK-9 deforestation. New folder? Fondling. Well... Anything new gets the fondling really.

I use my new knives to help demolish the old ones. No room for leftovers here! New is better! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Guyon and Bladite: enjoyed your humor responses, laughed out loud at those. Gingivitiskahn: eeeewww, sorry bout that, looks like the Eskabar is grinning, you'll have to have the last laugh on him sometime.
Enjoyed all your responses, and I think I will drag em out more for food prep too, and let the BK 5 rest for a while in the butcher block. thanks again
