What do you do when you don't have a knife?

O.K., I could check some luggage. But then it would be one of my knives. I'd rather have a dedicated knife.

He does not check any luggage. He has said that twice.

Yeah, no kidding....
Maybe you missed the subtle part of where we are giving our best advice, and that advice is to change his policy of not checking baggage.

Just buy a knife to leave with her. Don't worry about the few dollars it will cost you. How much are you spending on the tickets? How much is your time worth waiting for checked luggage? Or just carry her SAK - as someone already said - there is nothing wrong with a SAK - nobody ever messes with the Swiss Army :) .

YMMV, but if there's not a knife on my person, I must have forgotten my pants, (color me exposed).

As to the flying issue, well it appears your knife inventory is sorely lacking; as there have been non-metallic knives around forever and while I have not been on a commercial airplane in the last 2 decades, I never flew without one in addition to the EDC knives that are normally on my person.

My knives are worth the time it takes to pick up my checked luggage. Besides by the time I get off the plane, wade through the crowds, my suitcase is already waiting for me.

Assuming I was totally bladeless, I would simply stop at a dollar store or supermarket and buy a box cutter. That would get me by in a pinch.

This has been asked and answered many times since 9/11.

In no particular order:

1 - Check your luggage and take what you would like.
2 - Mail a knife to your destination and back home again.
3 - Leave a knife with someone at your destination.
4 - Borrow a knife at your destination.
5 - Buy a knife at your destination
6 - Sneak a knife in your check in baggage. (Stupid Idea)
7 - Sneak a non-metallic knife in your check in baggage. (Very Stupid Idea)
8 - Go knifeless

Take your pick!

Safe travels,

Dan

Thats why I don't fly any more. Maybe somebody should open a "cheap knife" store outside the airports. Or knife rentals. Like many of you, I always carry some kind of knife. Reminds me of a sign I saw while riding to Bike Week back in 1986. It said. "Guns, Knives, Beer, Ammo. Bikers Welcome!"

Yeah, no kidding....

Look, I am not trying to be pissy about this, :) but if the guy is able to travel w/o checked luggage for short trips then that would be ideal IMO. I just don't think that the knife issue alone makes it worth having to check a bag, run a risk of it getting lost or having to wait for it at claim, just b/c of a knife. He can just buy a knife on arrival, leave a knife with the GF, use it when visiting, and not deal with the checked bag(s). I have traveled a lot, and if you can get away w/o having to check bags, then it is the best option.

Remember the scene on the plane in Meet the Parents? :D

I'd buy good usable knife, and leave it with her. You can't go wrong with Spyderco or something of that quality and price range. You'd only be out 30-60 bucks, and you'd have a real dependable knife while you were there:)
As far as long distance relationships not working out? Tell that one to my wife;). We spent 2 years apart our first two years of college (about 4 hour drive). Then i transferred to her school when I changed my major for my final 2 years. Then we spent ANOTHER 2 years apart when I moved back home for work while she finished grad school (2 hour drive). We've been married about a year and a half and going strong:D

"What do you do when you don't have a knife?"

I believe that's called "taking a shower";)

The samurai bathed with there wakizashi in reach and some even bathed with wooden boken. Sounds silly till you realise that Miyamoto Mushashi fought and won his last 20 duels with a wooden boken including one against the second best swordsman in japan at the time. It was not acceptable for a samuria to be unarmed at any time. The cops didnt find that to ammusing though >< (just kidding, I always carry legal).

My girlfriend lives down in L.A., so I've been flying down to see her a lot. I don't like to travel with checked baggage, so that means none of my knives can come with me. Lately, to solve this, I've been carrying around her SAK while I've been down there. I'll pobably buy a good knife to leave at her house later.

What do you do when you have to leave your knives at home or find yourself in some other situation bladeless?

Is it a real problem?
Borrow her serrated steak knife from the kitchen.
If not having a knife is that bigger issue maybe she is in the wrong neighbourhood.
