What do you do with old belts?

Just curious if everyone just throws them away, or if anyone has some clever repurposed use for spent 2x belts.

Fowler used to keep a chaotic wad of used belts under his buffer to act as a trap when sharp pointy things got grabbed out of hands.

I throw them away except I will keep one of each grit in 50, 100, 220 and 400 and cut the belt in half. Then I hang them next to my bench and cut strips, when I need to do some small handi work with.

You should get years of keeping pants up use out of a good belt! But I mean if it’s broken then there’s other things you could use the leather for 🤷🏻‍♂️ Unless it’s a fabric one.

LOL! Sorry.
I usually trash em, unless a newish belt breaks, then I’ll keep it for sanding strips.
I also have kept a used ceramic belt that I push up against belts to break the abrasive off and expose new sharp grit, which works OK.

Worn coarse ceramic belts are good for profile hogging, so when they no longer cut bevels efficiently enough, they hog for a while. When they don't do that efficiently, they hog G10 and Boltaron another good long while before being trashed.

Medium ceramic belts: when they no longer cut bevels efficiently, they are repurposed for either machine or hand work on handles, where they generally have a more short lived stay of execution before also being trashed than the coarse belts.

I saw a youtube video of how to weave old belts into a basket. Not much of a basket weaver myself so trash for me once the belts loose all usefulness.

Depending on the belt and the backing and grit, you can splice a worn belt in half and grind with a 1” wide belt. Try it. You can be surprised at the additional grinding you can get with a 1” wide belt.

Work for elk dragging too!

Otherwise I toss em! I do keep the one least worn of old belts in each grit case something comes up that I don't want to waste a good belt on. Most of the time that never happens but just in case.

My idea would be to cut the loop and then split the belts to 1" (or thinner). Weave and splice them to make a 'tapestry'.

The textures and colors could have an interesting industrial look to them. Just need to find someone bored enough to take it on as a project.

Awesome idea and fun video with enjoyable music!

Not gonna do it though... haha
