What do you do with used belts.

I believe we are approaching greatness when facing the opportunity of used belts. I can somehow dream of greatness in or under or surrounding the future of the 36 grit belt bikini.

Suspenders - out of the question for me - I was told to doubt the sincerity of any man who wears both suspenders and a belt, something about commitment. Since I need a belt for my knife, I can't in good faith to my early childhood learning.

Business cards yea they could be used as knife sharpners. Trouble is they are worn out, still they might be better than a lot of the stuff sold to sharpen knives.

I thought about offering them for the cost of shipping to folks who need sand paper for hand jobs. We used old 36 belts to sand one of our log cabins to re-oil it, four belts were all that was needed to sand the whole house.

A light came on. They can be woven into floor mats and glued in place on a piece of plywood. You scuff your shoe soles on them to keep the bottoms clean and free of dust, and chips from the milling machine. Kind of like sharpening your shoe soles. Still, this isn't as good as the bikini idea.

I've come up with two nifty inventions for used belts - knife sheaths! Use your finer grit pieces with the grit on the inside to renew that hand-sanded finish you labored over. Use the appropriate grit on the outside and you have a device to do a quick edge touch -up....gotta go, I' m off to my patent attorney.....

BUT SERIOUSLY, I REALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF THE BUSINESS CARDS ON PIECES OF OLD BELT. SORRY FOR SNATCHING THE IDEA BUT I THINK I'LL DO THAT FOR THE NEXT KNIFEMAKERS SHOW DOWN UNDER !!!!

I use old 150/180/240/320 belts for sharpening / honing quick metal finishing around non-blade parts.

Here one for you - worn 36, 40 and 60 grit belts I use as the underlay for my wrapped handles on my lowest-cost Japanese style knives - it cuts $20-$50 per knife of the cost of using genuine rayskin. I call it "faux rayskin" just to be a little more well, "classy" than hey, thats old sanding belt ... NB.- these knives don't appear on my website heehee...

Its red-maroon, has flat-topped large sized grit - is abrasive enough but not too much is stiff and superglues very very easily to slab sided handles !! You can even spray paint it the colour you want !!

I'm also a recalcitrant hoarder and neever throw stuff away so there you go ...

Cheers. Jason.

Ed,

Don't forget to send the royalty checks to the makers here. Don't make us come looking for you.;) :D

Hey another idea for those of us with wood floors,we could just start cutting the belts open and then staple them down on the floor and that way we could keep reflooring the shop every so often.Plus it would seal any cracks in wood walls also..

I like the floor mat Idea allot,Bet it would work..

Use the business card idea all you want,We could make a big joke out of it with a bunch of us showing up at shows with them and handing them out to everybody.Kind of a forumite quiet joke,If you know what I mean..

This thread has given me some extra space in the shop!
That bench is 6 foot long and 20" tall at the back. :D

I like the idea of the renewable had rubbed finish, what a deal, almost like a perpetual motion outfit.

One use I have, just because it is were it is, I hang old belts behind my buffer, it is quite a jungle. When a knife flys from the buffer it is a safe place for the blade and they don't keep bouncing around the shop. Hasen't hurt a blade like slamming into the cement and depending on the depth of the belts, it is not too hard to find the blade.

The photo of belts on the bench provided some insight, I could just stack the old belts on the kitched table. Angie is an addicted house cleaner, she would find a place for them!!! quick!

It is good to know we all share the same opportunity.

I wonder if they would make good insulation in the ceiling of the shop?

Man Michael that looks like the bunch I have hanging around the shop now myself..Cool picture of them on the bench by the way..

Hey Ed I bet Angie would strangle you with them belts if you tried that trick:eek: Bet they would work to fill in any deep ruts around the farm though..
Bruce

Michael you toped me with way more used belts I guess I have been
canning some after all :D

ED that may not be good, she may just throw you out instead.:( :D

we can sell them to sadist they like to hurt themselves anyway
36 grit jock straps   :D it may cut the
population down too among other things:D
.
I just made reservations at the Waverly yesterday for the blade show.

ED if I sign up for the ABS at that time what will I need?
I won't have a table and I'm not bringing knives
but I will have some knives there on a dealers table he's been
selling for me for about 4+ years now..
I want to just have fun on this trip..the wife is coming too..
well as much as I can anyway..
:D

L6 - That looks like my basement floor. I really need to clean up the shop. I think it is time to rent a dumpster and do some spring cleaning to open up some more room for equipment. The basement seems to be getting smaller every day.

I have a hard time throwing out old belts, you never know when you might need them. I use mine for sharpening, hand sanding, and for protection when clamping the knife in the vise (grit side out of course).

I think I probably have 150 laying around, it is getting bad. Hey maybe 3M or Norton would give us a nickel a piece for used belts and donate that money to a worthy cause. Sounds like we could make quite a contribution.:)

Dan: All you need is a check to pay dues to join the ABS. You need to forge blades for three years as an apprentice to go for journeyman smith stamp, Unless you go to the ABS School, then it is two years. Then two more years to go for Master. Let them know you are now forging blades and the clock will start the day you join.

Maybe we could proclaim our trade to the outside world by building used belt totem poles in front of out shops. Kind of like the barber pole, etc. Heck birds could build nests in them, living tributes to the bladesmith.

Thanks ED
plane fair and the Waverly as of yesterday is under my belt now.
hope to see you there, if I can get past the crowd at your table:)

Ahhhhhhhhhh!
The day after I throw all my old belts out I come up with a job for em, sharpening lawn mower blades. Sure hated breakin in a new belt for that job, lol.
