What do you "fear" in the woods?

Hey Howie,
Tell us how you like the Dana Designs Pack, I've heard good things about them, but 6000 cu. in. is huge! I though I had a big pack

! (TNF Renegade, 5000 in.)

The only things I'd say you really need to fear would be unfriendly people, incapacitating injury, unexpected cold weather. Everything else is to be respected for it's ability to cause harm to you if you enter the woods unprepared, but I wouldn't fear it. I've kayaked, backpacked, and climbed in 4 seasons of the Smokeys and unexpected cold and wet were always my greatest enemies. I soon learned that cold and wet were always a possibility in the southern appalachians and from then on I just assumed that the temp could drop while the skys open up. Hypothermia, yech! Been there, did that, would have sold a kidney for a dry T-shirt.

Take care,

Mike

Last year I broke a travsverse process in my back... fortunately, I was able to finish teaching the trip... not sure I could get away with that if I broke the large bone in my leg.

Snakes.

I don't go anywhere by myself, I don't have to worry about bears or wolves - although a big 'roo can be a bit worrying.

But one thing we do have lots of in Australia is snakes - and far too many of 'em are venemous.
And on a chilly night, they look for somewhere warm to curl up..............

Hunters from Chicago.

I'm going to admit something somewhat shameful here--the worst scare I ever had was several raccoons. Have you ever had 4-5 raccoons fighting in a tree above you? Those of you who have heard this know what I'm talking about--it sounds like the end of the world. Now imagine that happens at a deserted campsite on your fiancee's first camping trip where the two of you are all alone--at 3:00 am when you're sound asleep!

The only thing that scares me in the woods is utter and complete silence. That is when my imagination tends to stray towards evil spirits and such. I figure if you are going into the woods you are part of the food chain and need to be wary and alert. An attack from a bear or cougar or whatever would be unfortunate but there is no malice there just instict. The only time I feel freaked out is when there is absolutely no sound in the woods becasue you usually hear the wind or crickets or something. And yes, the two-legged critters who want to play "Can you survive?" would scare me but I would be more pissed than scared because all I would need is a few seconds to get away and now the game changes.

For me it would have to be the Deliverance scenario or Larry in KY's pot growers with AR-15s or poachers who might mistake me for game.
