Puerto Rico?

My fiance and I have been offered a 5 day/4 night free stay at the San Juan Mariott beach resort for our honeymoon. Frankly, I'm more of a woods and mountains kind of guy and not so much the carribean islands/beach kind of guy and Puerto Rico has never really quite engaged my interest. I really don't know what all there is to do there, but it's a free trip and I dont have much $ so I guess we might be taking it!

Any of you guys/gal been there?

P.S.- what are the knife laws like there? I'd sure like to take an ESEE or 3 along with me :)

Free trip and you MIGHT be taking it? You better start packing ASAP man! Sounds like a great place!

I got one word for you: Bacardi.

If that's not enough:

Its a free trip! Why wouldn't you go? Maybe you will never get another chance to go.

Make sure you bring a knife. Find out the law when you get there. If you can't carry a knife, politely tell them that its your dive knife and you will make sure to leave it at the hotel next time.

Apparently, there is more than just white sandy beaches.

If that's still not enough to convince you, I will gladly take your place and go to Puerto Rico with your fiance.

puerto rico is awesome,my inlaws live there and i go once or twice a year.bacardi has a tour that is very nice,el moro is a old spanish fort and old san jaun is not to be missed.there is also the rain forest, aerocibo telescope and the rio el camuy and caves to explore.and the food is awesome!!if your real adventurous you could take a small plane to the little islands off shore, vieques and culebra.they are part of the virgin island chain and are beautful.anyway hope you have a good time:thumbup:

I haven't been there but many friends have. Apparently there are lots of different things you can do. Stay away from a place called La Perla its very bad infested with drugs & drug wars. The country side is beautiful from what I've seen in pics. I know you don't need a passport to get there & I have a strong feeling that you won't have any problems bringing your fave Esee with you. I'll call a friend who goes there on a regular basis to visit family & ask him a few questions for you, too

I lived there for over 3 years. I also go back from time to time.

Take the trip. Bring a knife.

That Marriott is one of the nicest hotels in San Juan. Try to get the highest floor possible. The salsa musci on the weekend penetrates many, many floors until well into the night-like 3 am. The area around the hotel used to be nicer but it's still a decent area. A short ride to Old San Juan, which you'll want to see.

Go and have fun. And try to forget it's the murder capital of the US.

My family actually knows the manager of that hotel. We also won a free stay in a raffle, ours is for 3 nights, and didn't include airfare. I don't know anything about knife laws, but the hotel is supposed to be beautiful. The hotel was just renovated. The food is supposed to be great.

I've never been there, but I know about 10 relatives and family friends that went there and loved the place. But, they're sheeple who don't hike or do many activities out in the woods, so I don't have any information on hiking trails. There is a rainforest that's driving distance from the hotel, which is supposed to be nice. Again, I don't know anything about the trails there. I'd like to pick up a 3 for my trip there.

While PR has hiking and outdoor stuff, it's not primarily known for that. Remember the whole island is only 35 miles wide and 100 miles long. There are 4 million people living in that space. San Juan is just a few miles across and has 2 of the 4 million in it. It has some of the worst traffic I've experienced in the world. Not as bad as Cairo but rush hour there is ridiculous. It is almost always quicker to walk. San Juan is more like the Bronx than your typical Carib. Island. I lived on the 25th floor of an apartment building so it's not all huts and tranquility. It also has Lloren Torres housing project--the largest public housing project in the US. There are nightly gunfighjts in that place.

But I think you'll have fun. I say go for it. Especially in the winter :)

I also heard that Puerto Ricans would steal the hubcaps off your car.

Yeah, my pr wife hates it when I say "We have to turn our kids upside down every so often to shake the hubcaps out of their pockets."

PR's will steal anything they can. And if they can't steal it, they'll break it.

The average house in San Juan has more bars on it than Rikers Island.

Lived there for 2 years...in a real bad area....my wife was born and raised there...I'll talk to her when she gets home from work.

You had me at "free".

Spend they honeymoon money on guns, knives, hookers and blow.....then spend the rest frivolously.

Puerto Rico makes some fine women. As a matter of fact I married one. :)

As for the free trip, just relax and enjoy the honeymoon.

Make sure you visit El Yunque (Rain Forest)

If you plan on driving in San Juan late at night be careful:

Avoid using public transportation due the threat of crime. Hotel taxis or a private car provide more secure transportation. When driving, keep doors locked and windows rolled up. Thieves have been known to hijack cars and rob motorists at traffic stops; many locals take the legal and safety risk of rolling through traffic lights after dark. After midnight, however, local law allows motorists to regard red traffic lights as stop signs in many areas.
