What do you guys think about the new GEC #79 "Montana Workhorse Whittler"?

Hi!

I was just surfing through the GEC homepage and found a pattern, I haven´t seen before. It´s a #79 Montana Workhorse Whittler.

The blade setup seems to be great Spear blade as a mainblade, wharnie and clip as secondary blades. That sounds like a great setup at the lenth of 3,75 inches.

Do any of you have already this new pattern? What do you think?

Imo that will be a great knife.

Kind regards
Andi

I hadn't seen that one yet. It has potential, but as a non-fan of spearpoints, I'll wait and see if they come out with a different main blade.

I've been trying to order one from my dealer but he is lagging behind other dealers in putting them up on his site. He said in an e-mail to me yesterday that he would have them up this morning. I't 0955 (my time)/1155 (his time)and nothing from him yet.

OT: Humppa - There's a package in the mail to you. Mailed it last Thursday.

Workhorse is a good name for it. Looks like it could serve many of the same functions as a stockman or a cattle knife, as well as whittling. Does anyone know if this is a 2 or a 3 spring model?

I wish it wasn't 3-springs, but it's probably a real whizz-bang of a knife.
Bulletproof I would imagine. Definitely beefy, maybe too fat?

definitely 3-springs

3-spring

If it's like GEC's 3-spring whittler stockman it shouldn't be too fat. Not skinny but not fat.

Looks nice- a different combination with all 3 blade shapes, should be hand filling. Might be nice if one of the secondary blades was a bit shorter than the other to aid in detailed tasks (both look similar length). Great- another knife to add to the "once I'm not broke" pile!

I haven't been able to find a good pick of the knife closed or the backsprings but it didn't look like there were any liners between the blades so it doesn't look like it would be much thicker than a 2 bladed knife with liners. I don't have any 3 backspring GECs so I'm not sure exactly how they're put together.

I don't see a liner going between the backsprings in this pic.

Or any in this pic

I believe you are right Trand. There are no liners on my 541308 3-spring Whittler Stockman and I'd say this #79 will be the same. Of course, if we're talking stag/burnt stag covers, the brakes are off as to the thickness of the knife as the thickness of the stag/burnt stag covers can be quite thick in themselves.

I'm giving my dealer another two hours to get these knives up on his site or I'm going to another dealer that I know has them and is ready to ship them.

I have been looking forward to this one and have held out to make it my first gec so far. Just ordered the micarta one. Can not wait for it to get here...

I was against the three spring assembly, but after seeing those pics I really like it.

Ed, there are some 5star+ dealers out there. Sending you a VM.

I just ordered a GEC Tidioute Red Dawn Jigged Bone Workhorse from my dealer. I knew he would come through for me.

He's the only dealer I've ever bought a GEC knife from (and I've got a gob of them) and he puts up with my antics. Actually, I buy 70% or better of my knives (all brands) from him. He gives great service but today I was getting antsy to get one of these knives on order.

I'm now waiting for a Northfield version of the #79 to become available and I'll order one of those too.

I really like the looks of this one, I have been looking at a single blade #45 in Grizzly Cut Bone, but his guy may be a worthy competitor for my first GEC...

Could I possibly get a message about whom these dealers are as well?

Yeah Ed, with stag, you never know how thick it will be. That was just the best pic I could find with different angles of the springs.

Thanks Bob. 5/8" doesn't sound bad at all.

I'm thinking I'll probably get one. I am looking for something to whittle with that's a little bigger than a typical whittler pattern and this knife looks like it might do the trick.

I like the Red Dawn Jigged Bone as I am reminded of the older Case red bone covers.

Gotcha Trand. I too have only seen the Northfield version with stag covers. As stated above, I've already got a Tidioute version on order and will order a Northfield version when my dealer gets them in.

The 3 3/4" size of these knives will make them good working knives.
