What do you guys think about the new GEC #79 "Montana Workhorse Whittler"?

I like that Micarta and the Smooth Amber Bone.

But, I think they may be too heavy & bulky for my taste. Can any owners state the weights please?

Thanks, Will

The calico bone looks interesting.

No kidding!! I'd like to see this stuff on some other patterns. (Also, these knives look awesome without the etches. Can we please stop with the etches!?!!?!)

I just ordered another one. This time a Northfield with Ruby Red bone covers.

That's two #79s ordered in two days. Yikes - there's two days to come yet over the weekend. No telling what'll happen by Monday. That #79 with Calico Bone covers looks interesting.

Could someone get a measurement on the length of the secondary blades? I'm tempted to get one to use for whittling, but in the pictures they look a bit longer than I would want for that.

Anybody got an idea of what the 3rd blade on the #79 is? Is it a Wharncliffe or a Sheepsfoot or a crazy/wacky version of the two combined? Also, does it appear that the blades of the Tidioute have a very slight swedge ground in them?

I just ordered this one. Tidioute with ebony covers.

That's three of these things since Thursday. I think I'll wait until these come in before ordering more of them. The Black Awabi and White Awabi look interesting.

After using it for awhile it looks like this today - 08-10-2013 - a year and 2-months later.

Well Ed, sounds like you are going to have a great monday, tuesday and wednesday when the mail arrives :encouragement: Look forward to your opinion of it in hand.

One distributor lists it as a Wharncliffe, so I guess it's half one and half the other. Even GEC can't decide which it is.

Either way, it'll work!

Congrats Ed on the triple pickup! I'm really looking forward to my red Tidioute, should come early this week. I really like the look of the Northfield Calico bone too, but now I gotta save up for their next jack knife.

My Blind Horse Knives Camp MUK Nessmuk fixed blade was waiting for me when I got home from the lake today. Didn't catch a lot of fish over the weekend, but my wife and boys bought me a hammock for Father's Day so I spent quality time enjoying it :D

I'm on the edge of getting one.

But, what's it feel like in the hand? How high do the 2 blades ride when the third is open? Some three blade knives can feel too much, handful of blades etc. Others, can be OK.

Many thanks, Will

Such a perfect looking pattern and some of the handle materials coming through look truly fantastic. Still, my GEC purchases have gone on hold (after 20 or so) to wait for some stainless blade options. Sincerely wish this one had 440C with some of those great ebony handles.

Dan, their sharpening is much better than it used to be. About 3 out of 4 of my newer ones are sharp.
Not Spyderco sharp, but most will shave.

My new whittler came quite sharp. Not as sharp as I'm sure it could be, but for me it's fine (unlike some of the older ones I have).

(Waiting on stainless didn't work out so finally) I pulled the trigger on one with kingwood handles today. Great looking configuration!

Bringing this thread back up to ask for impressions of use over time. Anybody have pictures and impressions to share while I wait on mine?

Thanks in advance, amigos and amigas

One of my favorite GEC's. The grinds on both of mine are excellent. Nice and slicey thin. This one is calico bone, and I've got one in mammoth. Be sure to post pics when you get it, their king wood is really nice!
