I just found this press and it's a 16 speed benchtop model says it hasn't been used in about 3-4 years. Runs great just needs to be cleaned up and to make an offer on it. What do you guys think? I was looking at Grizzly and they have a brand new 12 speed benchtop for 275.

I have a craftsman about that same size, i had a small cast iron table that works great to put the drill press on. Make sure the chuck is tite in the head and there is no wobble in it when running. As far as the size of this press i have not needed any thing bigger for me. Hope this helps.

What do you guys think is a reasonable (read cheapest I can get away with :D) offer?

That's probably a better brand, but here's the one I bought:

$60 brand new, including small vise and free shipping. It's kinda crappy, but it might work for bargaining. I think I'd offer $30 or $40 and go up to $50 if it's in really nice shape.

EDIT: I missed the $275 new price--if it's the same model, I guess it might be worth half in good used conditon? I'd still think under a $100 would be a good price.

Just found out he also has a small lathe with what he thought was the biggest variable speed motor he's ever seen on a small lathe. He thinks it's either a 1.5 or 2 hp variable speed motor. Plus a lot of other goodies he needs to get rid of. I'm already meeting him the earliest time he's next available.

I just found out it's a Central Machinery.... Not sure if I want that.... means it's a HF tool :barf:. He said he had a guy offer him $75 for it but not sure if/when he'll show up, so I can get it for at least that. Then again a brand spanking new one would only run about $100 more with a coupon.

He also has a floor standing model which he said was a Buffalo? Guessing Buffalo Anvil is the full name from what I could find online but can't find a website, and is a 16 speed as well. Anyone know anything that brand? He said he'd like to keep one, so I can choose either if I want.

I found out the lathe is a Pratt and Whitney with he said has a 6" swing on it and the variable speed motor with reverse. Has a 3 jaw chuck and he said it looks like it was modified slightly to accept a bigger piece of stock because part of the one side was cutout. I don't necessarily have a need for a lathe...Not even sure if it has a place in knife making. But if i can get it for a song and a dance I'm sure the variable speed motor alone would be worth it.

Anyone have any input know that I know a little more. You guys think any of these is worth getting? Thoughts appreciated. I'd like to get a somewhat decent press but I don't want to buy a piece of junk. I found a 5 speed benchtop Delta I can get for $75 but I think the slowest speed is around 700 and change as far as RPM which is probably still a bit too fast right?

Every drill press that you will be looking at that falls in the price range you mentioned is going to be made somewhere in China. My experience is you win some and lose some. I'd bought a floor mount drill press at Home Depot for around $300.00. This was a replacement for one I'd lost earlier in a fire. The one I'd lost in the fire was the same model as the newer one but much better made but I believe it was still made in China. If you have a Harbor Freight close by I'd get one there and spend the extra money on there replacement policy just in case.

The name pratt and Whitney is a good one. It's old school made in America. It all depends if it was abused by it's previous owner. Check for dings in the ways, and slop in the cross feed and overall appearance. Usually if it was well maintained it will show. Ask if you can run it and take a few cuts. If it cuts well the owner will more than likely show you how well it works.

If you want the lathe make sure that all the parts for tool stand is there( the part that holds the cutter) some are made only for that brand of lathe and may be hard to find if missing. Hope this helps.
