i pretty sure im getting a sog seal pup straight edge and the kydex sheath the only thing im worried about is aus8 i have a folder made out of it and it couldnt hold a edge very good and have you guys had a seal pup before and what did you think about

You shouldn't have any problem with AUS8A,
very good steel overall for a working knife..

AUS-8 is a decent steel.
The good thing is that it sharpens up rather easily.
You are taking a sharpening stone with you, right?

i'm a big fan of aus 8 and have had real good luck with it. btw you might want to make sure the pup is aus8 i thought they had changed to aus6. good luck.

I think the seal pup elite is aus8 with the cyro heat treat. If you get a standard seal pup, I beleive those are aus6.

AUS8 is arguably the perfect choice for this type of knife. It has superior toughness and corrosion resistance to any of the other top stainless blade steels like VG-10, ATS-34, and S30V. Of those, only S30V offers enough of a step up in wear resistance (edge-holding) to matter.

If it's a fixed blade, I'd be awfully tempted to get a good carbon steel knife. AUS8A is a good steel, as others have said, but you felt it didn't hold an edge as long as you expected it to, and this is usually a red flag. Not all AUS8A steels are the same, though, and you neglected to tell us the name of your folding blade knife. The ones I'm familiar with sharpen up and do okay, but I'd hate to see you buy one on our recommendations and then be unhappy with it. Try a good carbon Ka-Bar.

I have to disagree, I find it rusts unusually fast. I also do not think it has better wear resistance than the other steels you mentioned.

I checked their website. The Seal Pup is AUS6 - the Seal Pup Elite is AUS8. Buy the Seal Pup elite, it's worth the extra $s. I have a Seal Pup Elite Straight Edge and like it very much. It holds a great edge and is easy to sharpen. Mine hasn't rusted - either.

I agree. It's not so corrosion resistant for a stainless. I like the steel, but I accept that it has marginal corrosion resistance for a stainless steel.

If you're using a knife of AUS8 in the field, I highly recommend you have a sharpening tool with you.

The steel takes a terrifically sharp edge, but it dulls relatively quickly.

The SOG is a good knife but IMO there are better knives out there for similar money.

Take a look, for example, at the new Benchmade CSKII with a six inch blade of coated 1095 steel.

its an often overlooked steel, i find it to be a very good steel along with its chinese equivalent 8cr13mov

I agree, fair steel. As ssoon as I was not aware of the features of the newer steel pronbably I would like Aus8 better than any other also in a thiny adge like on spidye dragonfly. This because if you rearly use the knife soon or later (more soon than later) you have to resharpen and aAus-8 is great for sharpening. Then You can start thinking ATs or Cpm are way much better but, when you are on the stone, the winner is aus-8, for me
