What do you guys think of HideAway knives?

And Sproles and Homeslice, just be thankful you aren't the BMstrong guy. He asked me one too many questions, and I decided to tell him to check his dots. Unfortunately, his dots resembled something like this...

Ah. This is why I got an email into my box. I'm an example! The Example! I'm so PROUD!!!!

(And my 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Sobeleski said I was never going to make anything of myself.)

Fear not, gentle souls, who recoil in torment from the sting of Front's painfull whip. Just in time for Easter: I bring you hope! LO! For, if we check Front's www.hideawayknife.com

BEHOLD:

Leather Bikini Sheath. Price: $ 35. Because the bmstrong guy asked for it.

Mickey Yurco will attempt a leather bikini sheath for Brian's HideAway. Less leather; more work. Alas, when Brian says jump, I can only say "How high" ?

Who's your daddy NOW!? HUH! OH YEAH! Time for some "O" face!

(Good god, I will never get that Strider Ti Hideaway I have waiting for me...Let alone the other Hideaway thing I've been asking for..)

Brian

Beware, guys and gals -- F|S runs a secret script on her "Check Status" page that sets your order back a few days every time you hit "refresh."

True to this point, but never say never...

Hey FrontSight, is then a REAL chance to have a production HideAway soon?

I really love that knife, but I can't afford one in a long time :(
I'm sure I'm not the only one ;)

====================
Sorry for my engish :o

Well I’ve had the product for 3 days now and all I can
say is WOWee.

My first experience with the Hideaway came before I
even had it. I had accidentally had it shipped to my
family’s house where I figured my father and younger
brother would have their way with my new “toy” before
I ever saw it.

They would later ask me “That was your new custom
knife?”

That’s a great way to describe how easy it is to
overlook this knife.

Once I had it fitted on, I had to give this thing a
run for its money. Understand I did not originally
buy it for tactical purposes but my first day with the
knife made me completely rethink that position. I
took it, a Gingrich Straight, for a walk around my
neighborhood. No one noticed it! Unlike other self defense
implements, I actually don’t forget to carry this one!
Don’t get me wrong I believe through thinking about
what I’m doing and being aware of my surroundings I
can avoid 99.9% of trouble, but the Hideaway is a
little piece of steel that can provide a little peace
of mind.

I took it to my very knife-a-phobic workplace. And I
put it on and typed with it for about an hour. Only
one person recognized it for what it was and she said
it was “cute”. Normally I’d take that as an insult
but in this case it’s a good thing. If you have to
live with sheeple I can recommend the Gingrich models;
its matte black finish has the wonderful property of
making the knife look like a “gadget” from the Sharper
Image catalog rather than a tool or a holdout. The
knife looks perfectly suited to its urban element next
to the little electronic wonders I carry in my pocket.

Understand that I come from a school of thought that a
“tactical” knife has a 4 inch blade and is held in a
forward hammer grip. While I still think that
approach has its merits, I also realize my Hideaway is
much better suited for a lot of situations that I can
imagine occurring in a fight. It’s like a cybernetic
claw; a part of your body. No moving parts either.
This thing is the shiv perfected. It’s a completely
unconventional yet intuitive design. Put it around
your neck or on a belt or on a keychain and it is
invisible to your attacker but almost instantly
accessible for you. Unlike other knives, if you’re
feeling like you might need it, go ahead and get it
out and put it on and no one will notice!

And good luck dropping it! The second day I had the
Hideaway I tried something. I put the knife on, let
my hand go limp, and shook my arm like crazy trying,
actually trying, to get the knife to fall off. The
best I could do was to make it shift position
slightly.

Curious, I took it to some raw meat I’ve been storing
in the freezer. Effortlessly the small blade glided
through inches of chicken. I’d hate to imagine what
would happen if I ever went to shake hands with
someone while wearing this thing and forgot it was
there. Thick cardboard and a stack of paper were no
challenge either. I’m glad I got the Straight model
since I’ll probably have to resharpen it soon at the
rate I’m going! ;-)

The real test came for me when I had been “playing”
with it for a while and then noticed a piece of
paracord in the drawer with all my “toys”. The cord
had a lot of knots in it which I proceeded to untie.
I forgot I was wearing the knife! That’s how much
manual dexterity you retain while using this knife.

If you believe that form follows function is a good
design principle you will love this thing. There’s a
subtle perfection to its every nuance, from the
capsule design to the minimalist sheath to the steel
used to make it. If you hate crappy sheathing do
yourself a favor and order one. I love the neck carry
option of this knife and I hate most neck knives! It
was a long wait but it was worth it.

Hopefully soon that college degree will start paying
the rent and I’ll be able to order another one… the
newest model appeals to my practical side but man
those titanium hybrids look cool. Until then keep
turning out new designs for me to drool over

Bro I don't know how to tell you this, but without the customization it just wouldn't be a Hideaway. The fact that it's designed to fit YOUR hand and only YOUR hand is what makes the whole thing work... and really for what you are getting I think you couldn't make it any cheaper.

This has been a great thread guys, and is the reason I LOVE bladeforums. I have never even heard of this knife before, now I know about it and can see by the loyal following it has, it is a quality piece of work.
Thanks for the continuing education.
John...

Ohhhhhh bmstrong, that was cold. Very very cold. I had completely forgotten about that vaguely referenced ;) snipe that I posted on my website to bmstrong aka He Who Tries To Vex Me.

Your "All received for Final QC" dot has suddenly changed to... "All received for Final QC and Testing and 1 year Evaluation"

Moreover, I shall add another dot following that dot just for you that says, "Paid once? That's nice. Pay again bucko!" :D

Frozen chicken!!! I nearly spit out what I was drinking when I saw the frozen chicken part!

That whole concept of a knife-coming-out-the-side-of-my-hand grip where you'd have to cant your wrist at an angle did not make sense to me. I figured that is a result of not being experienced in knife fighting techniques. But lots of people seem comfortable with it.

Your knife was sheathed by Ken Brock of Brock Blades.

One thing though, and I say this to not create inappropriately high expectations: *no* custom knives are perfect. Only production knives are "perfect" - i.e., the exact same as the one before. I love custom knives because they have the personality of the maker inside of them.

Thanks much for your kind words.

Regarding the need for a custom fit: Both of these knives were ordered by guys, for themselves. There is simply a huge variation in hand sizes. Yes, there is a statistical "average" but it's almost irrelevant, because the the 'bell curve' of size distribution is very wide.

In the pic:
- The 2 midnight hideaways were finished by Justin Gingrich of Ranger Knives.
- The satin straight was ground and sheathed by Ken Brock of Brock Blades.
- The sheath on Ken's knife is the Pocket Protection sheath designed by Mickey Yurco.
- The light is a Photon III.
