I was wondering What you guys thought of this design I am new to this. They will be made from 3/16 A2 steel. The handles will be tan linen micarta or hickory wood. The large one is 9"
OAL and the small one is 5" OAL

Looks like it will be a pretty heavy chopper. Hope that was the intention.

If you have a normal handle length it looks like it will be around 12"x 2.5" at least.

It looks like the spine is a little upswept at the back of the swedge? Have you tried drawing it with the spine flat?

If the choice is between hickory and micarta, my vote is def for the micarta.

Are you going to be making this yourself? Heat treating? First knife project or 50th? Not trying to keep you from making it as your first but it seems like a little advanced grind line for files or for someone with little experience. The semi circle grind line is what I am reffering to. Draw it with that straight too. See how you like it.

This is a short bowie, I would like it to be larger but I only have a 9" piece. This is my first real project. I suck at drawing, the spine will be flat. The reason I was thinking about hickory is because I currently have no micarta and boatloads of hickory. I will make this myself, (I have a bench grinder) and send it out for the heat treat. I will try a straight grind and see.

That grind would be more doable with limited tools.

You are going to be doing this with a bench grinder with stone wheels?
Not to say it couldn't be done but a file or two might actually give better results.

There are some stickies to read through at the top that you should look into for more info on knife making basics.

Make a cardboard cutout of that design for that length you mentioned and I think the back of the handle will need some redesign. You will only be able to fit 3 fingers on it with those proportions.

I was going to use files and I was only going tio use the bench grinder to rough out the shape. I will make a cardboard model right now.

I made the model, the bigger one fits my medium-large hands very well. Btw thank you for helping me with my amateur projects Mloch! Is
the grind too high?

The top of the false edge and the rear of the handle both keep catching my eye as being above center of the spine. It's fine if that's what you're going for though, I like it otherwise. What use are you intending it for?

I am intending it for camp use and other such things. The reason the back and front appear that they are above the spine are that this is a free-hand drawing. Do you think the grind is too high?

It looks a lot like my Becker BK2 actually. I like the look of the grind, I can't say how it will perform but I think it would do alright batoning.

Hey buddy, if you're interested, I could make a quick sketch in CAD for you to print and trace out or w/e.
