Found this for a pretty good price. He says it's a 350 pound sawyers 18" x 5". Is it too shallow for a blade anvil or do you think the overall mass and weight will make up for it only being 5" deep? Thanks for any tips on this.

Should work great. Different than the usual blacksmith's anvil, but I bet it'd be awesome once you get used to it.

Darcy:)

I'd use it!
I'm on the hunt for some large steel for a post anvil and haven't had much luck.
Been to 3 junk yards and 2 steel producers or distributors.
I thought it would be easier than this to find a large piece of steel.
Nice find!

Cool glad to hear that it might be good. Most anvils are thicker and this being for saws I was wondering if it was thick enough for heavier work. Anyone ever use anything like this?

Well if you don't like it as an anvil you could always heat it up to cook Mongolian on.

If thats a manufactured Saywer anvil, Its unique for sure !
Despite its not optimal shape For its overall weight, Its still got plenty of mass & will work fine forging knife size work.

Btw, Saywer anvils are comparative rare, worth good money to a collector.

From the research I've done it looks like it was made for circular saws. The one advantage that I see is it is not domed like other round sawyers anvils so it will suit my purposes better.
