What do you guys use?

After cutting out a blank on the bandsaw and you want to grind to the lines you have drawn on your cut out blank, What do you use on the platen to keep the metal platen from scratching the hell out of the flats on your blank that you intend to keep some flats on the blade?

Or what do you rest the steel blank on instead of the steel platen. What works well and won't scratch the precision ground flat stock you bought. I think even a 2 x 4 has done it to me!

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't use a work rest at all. It's in a box on the shelf. I just grind in the air. So what supports the knife is my fingers

I rarely use the work rest. Most of my profiling is done on a wheel(s).
