What do you listen to in your shop?

During baseball season, it'll often be a Cubs game, though the rest of the year is usually catching up on my weekly podcasts and whatever audiobooks I might find interesting at the time.

Motörhead is playing right now but I listen to just about anything but modern rap. If I didn’t live in town I’d probably just listen to the crickets and frogs though.

Depending on what I’m doing I’ll listen to music or just my thoughts. If I know it’s something I have a habit of messing up I’ll turn my music off for a bit… I know my ADD will always power through my Adderall when I’m in the garage so I have to know limits lol

As for what I listen to, if it’s the radio I listen to NJ 101.5 from when I’m missing home (it’s mostly talk radio, but it’s all me and my dad would listen to in the garage back home). If I’m playing music it’s either Overkill, Anthrax, or Blind Guardian. I do listen to some Hank Williams occasionally but that’s tends to make me want to fall asleep

All through headphones, I’d hate to annoy the neighbors with my choice of music. The grinder and ringing anvil are probably bad enough already

. If I’m playing music it’s either Overkill, Anthrax, or Blind Guardian.
Lol! I haven't heard of anyone listening to blind guardian in a long time!!! I love their Tolkien inspired album cause I am a huge nerd!!

Their Dark Tower inspired songs got me to buy and read the whole series and I hate reading. Took me a year but I don’t hate reading as much anymore! When I have more time and money for books they’ve definitely influenced a list to work on

Episodes from about a dozen different podcasts on 1.5x speed.
Armstrong and Getty is a big one for news and comment for me
Some NPR ones on science and politics - The Human Brain, Left Right and Center, Freakonomics
Some other politcs ones - The Dispatch, Advisory Opinions, Honestly
Unique ones - Stuff You Should Know, Handel on the Law

Pandora. George Strait channel, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band channel, John Prine Channel, Emmy Lou Harris channel, a bluegrass channel here and there.

I usually listen to K Love radio station, but sometimes I link up my radio to my phone and listen to some heavier music like symphonic metal (Amaranthe, Metalife, Halestorm, etc), so it can be a weird mix sometimes!

My teenage daughter also listens to K-pop

I listen to the same stuff at the shop that I sometimes play at home when I am playing chess or working around the house. Basically royalty free music that I particularly like (Kevin McLeod has a bunch of those), or tracks I love from old video games, such as Sim City 4. Or instrumental music from various youtube musicians like Davie504 and 331Erock. And some instrumental hard rock and metal because it helps to keep the energy up. I used to listen to songs "bands" (i.e. with lyrics) and from time to time I still do but I have come to dislike a lot of the themes and lyrics in mainstream music so I am super selective of that stuff, but I never listen to it at the shop. Strictly lyrics free at the shop, but that doesn't stop me from singing along.

A sample of what I listen to:

This one is from level 2 of Unreal, a first person shooter I played over 20 years ago, and still replay once in a while. It is quite an adventure of a game, and the epitome of 90s PC gaming in my opinion. Even today they don't have a hard time making games as good as this one. And the music is exceptional. Time stamped it to my favorite part, but I love the mellow start as well, it is a favorite during hand sanding handles:

Anyone familiar with Unreal will know that this music switch takes place at a point in the game that was unprecedented for its time within the FPS genre (i.e. the first actual engagement against a Skaarjtrooper which ambushes you in a way never done before in FPS games)

Here are my two favorite tracks from Sim City 4:

Here is an instrumental metal piece which some may recognize:

And I can't get enough of this one. I timestamped it to skip the cuss word of the other artist at the start.

Morning all

Spending hours alone in my shop, I nearly always have wireless earbuds in listening to music and podcasts. I thought it might be fun to share what we are listening to, as it is always good to get recommendations on new podcasts to listen to.

***Warning***
I am British, and have a warped sense of humour, so much of my list may be unsuitable for 99% of peoples ears :D

Podcasts I'm listening to

Chatabix - 2 British comedians (Joe Wilkinson and David Earl) just chatting about what is going on in their lives
Gossipmongers - Same 2 comedians above, but reading out hilarious, often filthy pieces of gossip they have been sent in
Uncanny - Danny Robins investigates paranormal stories
No such thing as a fish - Discussions about interesting things that they have found out about each week
Lead singer syndrome - Interviews with lead singers from bands

Music I'm listening to

Exister - Hot Water Music
Anthems - Pure Love
White Crosses - Against Me!
Megafauna - An so I watched you from afar
Era Vulgaris - Queens of the Stone Age
I'm going to piss off the RINOs, commies and atheists in here, but I listen to Infowars, Redacted News, Drew Hernandez Live, The Highwire with Del Bigtree, the Salty Cracker, the Dark Horse Podcast with Bret Weinstein, Tucker Carlson, Joe Rogan, the Dan Bongino Show, and sometimes even sermons and theological debates. I'll listen to Salty Cracker one hour and then William Craig Lane debate the merits of Molinism the next hour.
