What do you look for in a "new" maker?

I simply look for makers who produce knives with extraordinary quality at a price that makes me want not one or two of their knives, but almost every one on their table...I don't find it often, but when I do--I buy every knife on their table, or almost ;) :D

ya know.....to be painfully honest......I look at how much it cost and how much I could get for it.

like most of us!!!! :p

aside from that.......I have to admire its looks first of all, and how well it is made after that......I buy watches because I like the way they look, and the fact that they are from a solid company so I can resell it for what I bought it for down the line (used watches that I take care of!)

for me to buy a knife to buy a knife from a new maker

1. knife must be visually appealing
2. the design should be functionally sound
3. if a new maker is making a common pattern...he must do it exceptionally well or it must represent a really good value
4. he should mark his knife in an appealing way. crummy marks ruin great knives
5. he/she should not be a jerk

and maybe most importantly

6. the maker should practice sound business principals

like...having realistic delivery times, be a decent communicator, and know at least a smidgen of accounting/good business practices so they can approriately price their goods

I can't add much to what's already be said above, but I sure wish I had the fundage to act on some dead on advice from my buddy Danbo way back when he was telling me about a couple of up and comers I should get knives from. Names like: Wheeler, Bradshaw, Knight, Farr, for example. Glad I listened when he steered me to Craig Camerer and Terry Primos. Gotta cultivate the knowledge whenever you can.
