I may ask in suprise: "You don't carry a knife? What kind of a man are you?". (Hope it's a good translation, I'm German.)
It's what my grandfather taught me all this time ago: "A real man has a knife on him any time." He could make himself (and me with him as a young boy) more comfortable in nature than in your finest living room, no matter weather or conditions.
