What do you put on your RAT while not in use?

I use mineral oil found at every CVS/Wallgreens/grocery store. I paid $2 for a big 32 oz bottle that will last me for years. And its food compatible in case I want to slice some food with it.

I also use mineral oil (paraffin liquid over here) on all my carbon steel blades. Regardless of what I use a knife for it is good to have the option of slicing food if required. I avoid any non food safe oils so that I never have to worry about whether a knife of mine is safe to use for food prep or not.

I have a few stainless blades, but I also have a bunch of carbon steel blades - mineral oil works on any of them quite well. I have 3 Opinels with carbon steel blades, BK7, BK9, Mora, KA-BAR Kukri Machete & an Izula on order. A small bottle of mineral oil will still last a long time. I also have a mineral oil soaked rag in a ziplock bag that I take camping to give my knives a quick wipe after use.

CLP or mineral oil for my carbon blades.

I've used Marine Tuf-Glide when storing knives. It leaves a nice, protective film on them.

It's also a good restorative for certain natural scales (bone, ivory, etc.) and for wooden, cutting boards.

Lots of guys in Traditional give their slippies an overnight mineral oil bath to restore some snap.

And should you need a good laxative... :D

I use sewingmachine oil (naaimachine olie), it's a very fine oil for moving parts. Will switch to mineral oil when I can get it here..

Mineral oil = paraffin oil/paraffin liquid = baby oil (with added scents).

I would be VERY surprised if you couldn't find it somewhere. Mineral oil/paraffin is used on humans and on animals to coat the intestinal tract to cure constipation - so at chemists (what Americans call drug stores) and at vets you will probably find paraffin. Baby oil is probably at your local grocery store/supermarket.

Over here it isn't called mineral oil - we call motor oil that isn't the synthetic stuff mineral oil. I had the same problem when I was looking for denatured alcohol for my camp stove - that stuff is easy to find here as long as you realise that you are looking for methalated spirits.

nothing, they collect dust until i use/carry them. I sharpen them and check blades about once a month.
