What do you really need?

Honestly? I dont even really need a knife. I like them. But really isnt that the case with anything? We dont need 90% of what we as humans consume and or purchase. But I dont think that means I should NOT get a knife with better steel. I enjoy it and that is what is important to me. I dont need a knife period and I sure dont need to spend the amount of money on them that I do. But a cheap knife doesnt put a smile on my face or get me excited which really is where I feel my money is going. Not to any real world performance advantages.

I totally agree. I use my knives almost daily. But I don't actually NEED one per se. For what I use them for, mainly at work, I can use a standard box cutter supplied by my employer. But I prefer to use one of my pocket knives, whatever I choose to carry that day. Who knows what I'm going to "need" a knife for throughout my day. Anything could happen that requires me to use one.

I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. With that being said, I would like to choose a better steel, within my price range of course, that would be able to withstand a variety of different tasks. Or I could just carry a few different blades, which I do.

Knives are a luxury hobby for most of us. Even those that never spend more than 50 bucks on a knife are still paying for luxury and pride of ownership more than anything. NKPs live just fine with scissors, box cutters and kitchen knives.

I've been EDCing a CRKT Foresight for 2 weeks now. Aus-8 Steel works fine for me, I don't need a $300+ knife, but I'd like to have a few. My CRKT M1 was my primary knife for work, it's done everything I've asked of it and then some. Inexpensive blades and a decent quality stainless works fine for me, that's all I need.
