What do you recommend for a KEY CHAIN knife?

I too would like to hear from anyone that could give any kind of a review on the UtiliKey.

I am looking for a key chain knife but would also like it to have some extra utility tools on it. I looked at the Micra and it seemed a little bit bulkier (heavier) than what I would want to carry in my pocket on my key chain.

The UtiliKey from what I have seen from pictures seems like it would be perfect since it is just like carrying another key if it is a well made tool.

If you use and carry the UtiliKey, what do you think about it compared to the other options everyone has mentioned?

Thanks,

I was looking at the newest SMKW catalog and they had a small SAK with no toothpick or tweezer, but instead a retractable pen and a LED light. What was novel about it was the knife had a little leather keychain sheath that the knife slipped into. It even had a die cutout that let the Victorinox symbol on the side of the knife show through.

Micra...scissors, knife, standard screwdriver, nail file, ruler, tweezers, phillips screwdriver, and bottler opener with eyeglasses screwdriver. Plus you can find them for $15 at discount and local sporting goods stores. IMHO, it beats the hell out of the small SAK.

A Sifu, definetly a Sifu.

But if that's a tad on the bulky side, my vote goes for a micra, you can even get them in different colors these days...

As a part of my nature, I often side with the 'underdog' or the little guy. But in this case, ... definitely a Micra.

I also carry a Micra and a white Photon II on my keychain, but as much as I like the Micra, it seems a bit bulky with the keys in the pocket. I'd give the Utilykey a try, but I remember someone saying that it tends to open and fall off the keyring.

I have used both the micra and the victorinox keychain knives, I love the micra though if I want small the victorinox gets it. I gave about fifteen or so of the Victorinox out as gifts and most of the reciepients all use them! they are not knife nuts just relatives...or is that relatively Knutty?

Gratuitous plug here: I have an extra Victorinox Swiss Lite (mint) and an extra Midnite Manager II (VERY light carry - about three days). I'll gladly let 'em go at rock bottom prices. Post if you're interested.

Hi tallpaul,

Which model Victorinox are you talking about?

Thanks,

Hey mnblade-I've seen them only in photos and I'm curious about both. I'll take them both.

I've got a Bear MGC Min Bear Jaws that is almost the exact same size as my Leatherman Micra. It has some small needle nose pliers that I really like. I do think highly of the Micra. I also have a Seber M3 and M4. The M4 is nice because it has small locks that prevent things from closing on you, but it's tough on the nails to close a tool. It does have the most tools of any of the ones I own. I also have a Victorinox Swiss Card and the Swiss Tech Util-key UST. The Swiss Tech was very sharp when I got it, but it's not comfortable to use to me. I also have 7 other Victorinox. The one I like the best is what I think is called an Executive. It has a large and small blade, scissors, orange peeler (more useful than you might think), maybe a file, and the usual toothpick and tweezers. Last, but certainly not least, is a carbon fiber Spyderco Ladybug. Don't laugh. It may be very small with only a 1" blade, but it's ATS-55, extremely sharp, and too light to register on my small food scale in the kitchen. Unfortunately, it's the least useful (with just a single blade) and the most expensive. It is however, the best blade design of any of them.

Now, with all that said, what do I actually carry and use everyday? The Swisscard stays in my wallet for it's toothpick, file, tweezers, pen, ruler, and scissors (don't use the blade any). The Seber M3 (4 screwdrivers, 2 of them Phillips, and pliers) is on a split ring with a Photon II attached. The Swisscard isn't a keychain tool, but being the size of a credit card (thick as 2 credit cards), it fits easily into a wallet and therefore has as much convenience to me as a keychain tool.

All the others I think are well made and good to have, but the Swisscard, M3, and Photon just fits what I want in my pocket at all times. Since I came up with this combo, I have yet to be somewhere, wishing I had one of the others.

If you're like most of us, you'll probably end up with several before you find the right one(s)!
