What do you think of Facebook as a venue for knife discussion?

I signed up for a facebook account a while back and have been ignoring it since (not enough time for "frivolous chatter") :D

And now I've decided to go ahead and use it more.

I'm noticing quite a few "knife guys" on there.

Do you use your facebook account to talk knives? or just connect with friends?

Just curious!

Don't like facebook? or don't like to use it for discussing knives?

Dan

I had a FB acct. for about a week, then canceled it.Too much chatter & people contacting me from the past that I'd rather forget.

Facebook is blocked for me at work where I have fast internet.

At home my system is so slow it's really difficult to navigate Facebook.

While I have my knives posted in photos in my albums and talk about them now and then I don't use it as a venue to sell them. I've sold some on there but it was not my original intent when I opened an account. For me being from WV and living in OK my entire family is back east so my motives for signing on were to keep in touch with family. It has worked quite well for that. If anything I know too much about what is going on in family now almost as if I was still right there on top of it. Its all good though and I don't feel so out of touch.

There are draw backs. You get asked to be friends a lot and find yourself struggling to know if you even know this person. For guys on here many times all you know are their screen names and when they approach you on FB for friendship you don't associate the screen name with the real name so some get a bit put out when they don't get an immediate response or get ignored. Not to forget the all too frequent hack attempts that seem to come up as well as mysterious links you should never open sent as if by someone you know who had their account hijacked and never actually sent it. Oh, and can't forget the frequent friend requests from big breasted girls wanting manly friendship usually coming at you with names like, Lola or Lylith who is probably not a girl at all but some scam artist in Nigeria wanting your personal info so he can hack into your accounts!

Otherwise its pretty much like the forums in some ways other than the security breaches that seem to be an issue with them. There seems to be something about the privacy issue always being discussed where private messages are not so private and stuff like that but truthfully the same could be said for the forums I think its just par for the course and you remain properly cautious while enjoying the things it offers. If nothing else FB gave me yet another place to dump pictures and store them besides third party accounts, my own storage and here. So in the event I lose some hopefully I will still have access somewhere.

I like this forum for knife discussion. Very open and free flowing information for all to see.

I use Facebook all of the time. I don't use it to talk knives much though, because I have lots of friends on there that aren't into knives. I suppose I would talk about knives if I had more FB friends who were into them. There is always the potential risk of alienating folks though. I use FB for professional networking, so I have to be a little careful about what I do and say.

I have a FB account but dont use it much... mainly to talk to family or friends around the world....
I talk knives on BF... I have knives pictured & campouts posted on FB but I may visit FB 2-4 x's a month just to much BS and BF is design for this facebook is just an avenue of mindless chatter b/c in the middle of a knife convo on the wall ,some else is posting happy times about newborns or Birthday party info .... ETC. unless you do a private chat which is between you and that person and leaving other members out.... like pm'n here....talking knives but between 2 parties only unless you go and post on the Wall and then it gets interupted with farmville or mafia wars BS and quizzes...

Many of the reasons you guys are stating - I agree with 100%. And that's what kept me off facebook for the last year or so.

I don't FB, there is simply too much gossip, and too much bad press about privacy.

I have had good luck with Facebook, more as a venue to connect with people I have met throught the years. In the last few months I have also sold several knives to people who do not use Blade Forums, and thereby establishing a new market. I also update people on Facebook what I am doing in the shop, and to stay in contact with customers. Facebook has been an important tool for me .....

There are pro's and con's to it but on the whole I think it's good !

I have a few friends who I met on these forums and I also added some specific knife makers websites such as Blind horse knives so I can get updates on their work !

Bad idea. The privacy is practically gone and 1 mil. people you hoped to never hear from are sending you messages every day. In short don't bother.
