Well, in my endless search for that one good outdoors knife. I've come acrost the Helle Brakar.
I like the look, the grind and everything about it, But I wanted to know if anyone out there had one, and if so what they think of it.
I know it will be one helle :p of a cutter(sorry I had too), and I think I may get a diffrent sheath made but thats not a big deal.

Thanks guys.

For a short time, I had the Helle guthook knife and it was a very nice knife, but I decided I didn't like the guthook and sold it.

they're excellent knives, inspite of thier idiosyncracies. The laminated steel really does hold an edge for a very long time, and sharpens very easily. This comes at the cost of a blade that bends easily with lateral stress, and scratches easily (big whoop I know) Bear in mind, it bends right back, but it's still something I'm not comfortable with. I could bend a Brakar blade by hand myself. (done it before) I gave one to a friend who took it moose hunting, forgot his sharpener and cleaned TWO moose with it, without sharpening.

I still like Helle for smaller 3-4" blades, but I generally look elsewhere when it comes to the 5" and up blades.

Incidentally, while I'm discussing Helle knives though I happen to think the Tollekniv is just about the best bang for the buck out there- fully in league with Moras for sure. a bit more expensive, but MUCH more nicely finished.

Hope my humble opinion was worth somethin'!:D

Haha, how true. Heres the little bute :D

Great knives - super sharp out of the box (Tube?). Hold an edge well and sharpen up easily. Not really heavy duty knives but otherwise highly recommended. Some of the curly birch grips are really nice.

Yeah, I've come to love my axe for the hard stuff. But Ive been on that endless search of the best cutter, and theres nothin' like a scandi grind :D

I like it. Where did you pick it up? maybe I can get you to pick one up for me, do you have paypal?

No, I havent pick it up yet, Its on for 100 duckards from sworddepot. I'd like to buy it from the us to get it cheaper, but I have no faith in the border guys. So ordering from the states is off the list for me. And as Ive found sworddepot is more expensive, but they have a huge selection, so.

My situation is all my knives, other then a meager selection of saks, (at a huge markup) have to be ordered.
I like sworddepots selection as well, all the BRKTs as well asontario and beckers. Speaking of beckers, did you order your bk7 or buy it locally?
And sorry about the hijack.

haha, no its fine man. I had to order the Bk7 off the net. It came from knfiezone. As like you many of my knives and tools come off the net. My wetterlings though came from local shop, Which I like supporting soo.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I can get Buck knives and Smith's stones and whatnot locally, but that's about it. Lots of "Winchester", Gerber and CRKT in local stores, but I'm not into that stuff much. The new surplus store in town has Ka-Bars and USAF knives for about the same as I can have 'em shipped online, so if I decide I need another one I'll buy it from him.

Sorry to drift AGAIN lol; I haven't used or even handled a Helle but they have a very good reputation. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I think the Helle Brakar is a real nice looking knife, good design, for what that's worth, I have no experience with one. I'm looking hard at one of the puukkos by Iisakki Jarvenppa (Finland) which are shown on the Ragweed Forge page.

Great knives -- they are slicers and cutters, not prybars, though. Light, and soo gret for backpacking, extremely sharp (love that Scandi grind), easy to sharpen and hold an excellent edge. The sheaths generally are not up to the quality of the knife, though; use the supplied sheath as a pattern and make another out of heavier leather, then waterproof it with SnowSeal or something similar. Ragweed Forge has them.

I've got a Helle Jergermeister that is AWESOME. Thin bladed and light. Great knife.

Jegermeister was one of my favorites. I sometimes wish I hadn't let go of mine. Very light, excellent handling, with that thin, razor sharp blade. Kinda like an Old Hickory or a Green River, but more refined.

Speaking of refined, I finally thought up a way to state my sentiment regarding the Brakar. It feels and handles like a larger, beefier, and more rugged knife, but lacks the strength of one. I do like Helle knives alot, despite the forementioned idiosyncracies, but not that particular model.
Funny how things work out. That was the first model Helle I thought I wouldnt' be able to live without, but as it turned out it was one of models I was happiest to see go when I got rid of my collection.

Yeah, this one has come up time after time in my searchs. Along with this one was the Safari and eggen models. But there is somthing about the look of this one that really stands out for me.

Thanks for all the guys, But now I have to wait a couple weeks befor I can buy it. Moving allways comes at the worst times :(

moving time, eh? wow....sorry to hear that! what a PITA!

Can't wait to see the review! it IS an attractive knife, with excellent steel, and my favorite blade length. (besides that, it has been mentioned a time or two that I'm a persnicketty SOB....):D

I have a jegermeister, super sharp, beutiful knife. Not a great choice for spliting wood but a great cutting tool.I love the stag ring in the handle.:)
