what do you think of Masters of Defense?

Haven't tried tightening the pivot point as of yet and may not need to in a good long while. The aluminum handle is called T6 aluminum I belive, which has a lot of titanium in it. The frame of my CCO is forged T6, and I don't have any complaints in all the years I have carried this pistol. The tempest I rec. doesn't swing to easily either. You know when you are deploying the blade that's for sure. Takes a cery conscious effort to do so. Not hard to do mind you but you know you are doing it. To me that is good thing. So for the few hours I have had it in my pocket I am sold on it. keepem sharp

Dear Longbow:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Tempest. You keyed in on many of the design concepts I put into the knife, which makes me feel very good. I hope it serves you well.

By the way, if you ever do need to tighten the pivot pin on it or any other knife with a round female pin half, get a piece of duct tape, place it over the head of the female side and press it down tight to both the pin head and the handle. This usually works well to hold the pin in place while you tighten the male screw head.

Happy Holidays and Stay safe,

Mr Janich , does Blackhawk do warranty repairs on older MOD product? I have a 2000 Dieter CQD , the beast is in good shape as we speak , so I'm just curious . MOD has very nice , and very underated product . Some of the designs are extremly innovative . I look forward to the 2005 line up .

i once sent a badly scratched trident (yeah, well, diamond hones and newbies *shrug*) back for recoating, and when it came back, i think they gave me a new blade entirely
the only gripe i had was the fella insisted on shipping it global express priority that jacked the cost way up

nevertheless, i love my trident
i've handled benchmades, emersons, no striders though, and nothing feels like it belongs as much as the MOD trident

Dear CDF:

Yes, BlackHawk/MOD will repair older products, as long as we have the necessary parts in inventory. As products are phased out of the line, we try to maintain a reasonable supply of parts to repair them, but it's conceivable that we could hit a point where that parts supply has been exhausted. When that happens, we may have to substitute another comparable product.

All MOD knives, with the exception of the out-the-front Triton, have a lifetime guarantee against defects or breakage during normal use. Due to the complexity of the Triton design, it has a one-year warranty -- consistent with most other OTF manufacturers in the industry.

Thanks again for your kind words and your confidence in MOD products.

Have a great Holiday Season!

BlackHawk does not have a showroom in Norfolk. They believe very strongly in supporting their dealers. If you contact them, I'm sure they could point you toward a well-stocked dealer in your area.

Stay safe,

I have had my Tempest now for about a week. I absolutely love this knife and as stated previously I think I may have finally found the edc for me. Ergonomics are as good or better than anything I have handled to date.

There is one frustrating problem with the knife though. I can't get the darn thing to stay sharp! I also am having a devil of a time getting it sharp. I don't know if the blade is to thick or maybe the steel slightly soft or a combination of the afore mentioned. When I think I am getting close to where I want the knife to be and then use it the edge disappears. It is frustrating to say the least. :(

I have put a grabby edge on it and a highly polished edge on it to no avail. :grumpy: Anyone here have any tips or anything I am willing to listen. I also have a mine SOCOM elite that is about the same size as the Tempest is but is a lazer cutter, also rec. that for Xmas. I don't think the elite holds a candle to the Tempest though as for a carry edc outside of the sharpness thing. I have only used the Tempest sparringly and only once tried it on my dummy I have stored in the garage and well frankly it just isn't cutting it for a self defense type of carry knife due to the problem with the edge. The liter wt. SOCOM elite cuts the carhart dummy with out a problem and my CRKT M16 tanto pe just plain tears it up. I get good penetration with the point on the Tempest though just not slashing cuts. I really didn't get it for a martialist knife though more for an edc as I carry a handgun on a CCW.

Anyways if someone wants to weigh in on this feel free. I am totally frustrated at trying to get the damn what I consider sharp. Keepem sharp

I think we can solve your problem :)

You are probably raising a wire edge and then having it roll over on you when you use it. When you get a blade really sharp, the final edge is so thin we call it a wire edge. It feels like a razor when you test it. Unfortunately, it is too thin to hold up, and any use bends it to the side, making the edge feel dull. Stropping it lightly will stand it up, making it feel sharp again, but any use will bend or roll it over.

What you have to do when you've gotten a knife very sharp, is to strop it vigorously to break off that wire edge, or "feather". Another way to clean it off is with the Sharpmaker, if that's what you use to sharpen it. In actual sharpening, you hold the blade vertically. To break off a wire edge, hold the blade parallel to the opposite rod and stroke down a few times on one side, then the other. Then do a few alternate strokes vertically and you should be good to go.

cognitivefun,
try to actually handle the knife before you buy it. Their QC is not as good as some other knife manufacturers' and some of their designs (like the Razorback) just plain suck in reality while looking great in pictures. Stripped screws seem to be a common occurence with MoD knives.

That being said, most of their knives are on par with Microtech's offerings and that sure says a lot!

No qualms at all with the qc. It is a very well designed tool. Ergo's as mentioned are superb at least for me. As for the sharpness thing well I have stropped it, honed with a coarse and med and fine diamond hone, a hard stone and med. stone and stropped it some more. I am not having a problem with a wire edge I don't believe. Don't get me wrong the blade gets plenty sharp and it gets a nice hard sharp to it. It just doesn't stay that way. Once the edge is gone it takes a while to bring it back.

So thinking that I may be doing something wrong I got out a knife that is particularly hard for me to sharpen. That is my BM 975. Haven't carried it for awhile so got it out and damn pretty sharp. A couple of swipes on my steel and it was pretty dull. Used a coarse diamond hone and then a med. stone on it and in less time than it takes to type it was hair popping sharp once again. I don't know maybe I will send it back to MOD for there opinion. The only thing I am doing is loosing a bit of the edge steel. Keepem sharp

I ended up buying an Extrema Ratio MPC that I am quite happy with rather than a MOD. Don't know how comparable they are but I was looking for a massively heavy duty folder and I got one :)

I don't have a problem with this knife being a heavy duty for what it is and how big it is. For its size it is very well put together and heavy duty enough for me. If I need a h.d. folder I use my large Buck/Strider. Now that thing is a heavy duty sharpened pry bar but more elegant than that. Nope the problem I have having is with the edge. I have thinned it down a bit and that seems to help a little but I just can not get it to where I think the sharpness needs to be.

I know this though. For all the dozens and dozens of folders I have owned through the years none has fit my hand better and more securely than this one. It just plain comfortable. Nope the problem is definetly with the edge. May send it back it in for them to look at. Just frustrating for me. I can normally get a good edge on just about all of my knives either free hand or with fixture system. keepem sharp

Dear Mr. Janich,

Around the 2nd week of December of 2005, i recently bought a MOD CQD Mark 1 Auto with partially serrated edge from a Blackhawk authorized dealer (Manny's Survival and Outdoor Equipment) in the Philippines. I have had the dealer mail in the warranty card and have also registered the warranty on-line. It took a few attempts before I was able to contact DONNA KEATON in order to get my knife registered. I know, given the quality and hard work put into MOD knives, that I may never have to use the warranty but it just gives me peace of mind knowing that I have properly registered my purchase and have the warranty on hand in case I do need it.

Although your knives are at expensive because they are top-of-the-line, I have saved up to buy one because I really believe that they could help pull my fat out of the fire. I am a federal law enforcer in the Philippines nad in the short while that I've had my CQD Auto, I have found it to be very useful indeed. Will you PM me or e-mail me at Punisher_nbi45@hotmail.com or Punisher_nbi45@yahoo.com so that I know that you have received my request?

Thanks and Happy New Year!

I like some of their designs very much. Too bad they didn't hear of S30V (or even VG-10) and G-10 yet :( 154CM and aluminium is no longer a winning combination :(

Hey Dialex good to hear from you. I don't know if you all remember but MOD was running ads last spring trying to sell a Hawkbill of their's called the "Caracara" which was listed with S30V. It also has a Titanium handle as well.

Did they alread delete that one from their line? But it seems like I have seen other MOD knives with S30V in them as well on various websites. If I'm wrong I would like to know.

Mr. Janich

Enjoyed talking with you about knives at the Blade show. Any idea on the release date of the Kalista Fixed Blade?

I wouldn't expect him to check into a thread that's a full year old. As you can see from his post count he doesn't post much.

Dear Punisher:

I have read your post and ensured that your knife is fully registered for warranty coverage. Thank you for your purchase and your confidence in MOD products. I hope your Mark I serves you well.

Dear JD Spydo:

All three versions of the Elishewitz-designed Nightwing are S30V. The Caracara is also S30V, but its production has run into a few problems. The first units of that just started shipping to dealers, so there are several hundred out on the market. More production is already scheduled for early 2006.
Also, there is a variant of the Caracara called the Garra that is part of our new BlackHawk Blades line. It is the exact same design, but with titanium liners and G-10 scales rather than solid titanium handles. The blades on the Garra are also S30V. It should be available around the time of the SHOT show.

Dear Halfneck:

The sheaths for the Kalista just shipped to our assembly facility. The knives should start getting packaged late next week. They should be in inventory and ready for purchase sometime during the latter part of January. BTW, the sheath system, which includes a paddle attachment, belt attachment, IWB loop, neck chain, and adapter plate, will include a full instruction sheet that describes in detail how to configure it for all the various carry positions.

Dear Quiet Storm:

I don't get to post as much as I'd like, but I do try to stay on top of things and answer questions when they are asked of me.

Here's wishing everyone a very Happy New Year and the best of everything in 2006.

Stay safe,

OK, seems like I just put my foot in my mouth...

Hi Michael! I just re-read a few chapters of Knife Fighting: A Practical Course a few days ago.
