Looking for something like this in 7.62 Nato but I dont want junk.

Id love some input :cool::thumbup:

I think they were much better a couple years ago when they had the $199 to 249 price tag on them. Just remember you get what you pay for, to me it is still a $250 clone gun that is selling for 550 to 650 now. Just my 2cents Bill

Hey KH, Check out the HK Pro forum, if you haven't already, lots of good info there

IMO - spend the $$$ and get the real deal

I bought one when they were cheap! I loved it, I rolled a coyote at 275 yards one time with mine! Any ammo, it would rock and roll till she ran out. as fast or as slow as you wanted to go!! I don't know the price now. Though!

They can be really good but the big thing you have to look for is the bolt gap - the measurement from the barrel to the bolt.

I think the ideal is .20" - I'd have to look for sure but I'm pretty sure that's it.

Look at the bolt and see if it's been ground to create the gap artificially - some of the barrels were pressed in too far and they simply ground the bolt to fix the gap. It's not fatal but it's not perfect.

The larger the gap - to .20" is better. Smaller makes problems. My CETME gaps in around .12" and runs fine - If I added the +.04 rollers it would be good.

Ask me how I found out about the ground bolt...

Mine shoots 3-4" at 100 yards - acceptable MOA for a battle rifle.

If I was going to buy one now, as much as I like the HKs, I would buy a JLD PTR-91 in a 16" barrel.

PM or e-mail if you need anything more and want to talk off-thread.

I owned the Hk91 (.308) and Hk93 (.223), have experience with Hk/Mp5, etc...

The recoil-operated mechanism is / can be rough on the shoulder. At least in Texas, in short sleeve t-shirts in the summer...

I now prefer a gas gun.

For a .308 - get a FAL or DPMS LR308 (easier / cheaper to find mags than Armalite).

I remember when they were a dime a dozen and people said that you should never buy a CETME because they were a useless surplus gun. Stupid me, I listened. LOL

Also, the fluted chambers of the CETME/HK will mark the brass. Not a problem if you're not reloading but if you do, it will shorten brass life.

I agree with the recoil being a little more - not a lot - due to the delayed roller-block mechanism of the CETME/HK action. I have never found it to be an issue personally but if you're recoil sensitive it could be a deciding factor.

I've got experience on some of the HK systems as well - the HK 91, 93, and 94. As well as the MP-5, UMP-40, and the HK-33 (a personal favorite in 5.56).

If you're considering it, check the HK copies, FALs, and 7.62 ARs for comparison.

The 7.62 ARs are just a bit bigger if you already have AR platform experience. I would look at the Rock River 7.62 platform the LAR-8 - it feeds from FAL mags, much cheaper. Armalite mags are the most expensive of the big AR platforms.

Deciding between the FAL and the HK platform can be like the Ford v. Chevy debate. Go what feels best for you.

Thanks, been wanting to try one of those babies

I want to get a PTR 91. Those are suppose to be quality reproduction of the HK91. I've only handled them at the gun shop but from what I can tell, they seem very nice.

I'd stay away from CETME's.

I think Springfield Armory made an HK91 sporting rifle of some sorts, but very rare, and just as expensive as the real HK91.

For a new production, quality 91 clone - PTR91.

If you get one, lemme know. I wanna shoot it :)

PTR91 is a great gun. I have 2 of them and have had zero problems with them.

I had a cetme awhile back and sold it once I got the first PTR91. Not that I had any major issues with the cetme I just got much better groups with the PTR.

Just my 2 cents............

Yet another one for PTR-91

Friend of mine shoots 1/2" group at 300yd with one. I think it was made during the EBR ban of yore so has no muzzle brake. But was made after they fixed their "feed issue". The PTR-91 was originally chambered for Winchester .308 only, and had problems feeding surplus ammo. The one I got to shoot ate everything we fed it.

CETMEs are kind of a "crap shoot" even if you won't excuse the pun....some are junk and others are superb, just depends on how the ol' dice roll.

If it's good enough for Martin Riggs, it's good enough for me :)
