Thanks for posting this video again (it was previously posted in the 'Wood Splitting with the Twist" thread). Tom Clark definitely knew what he was doing. I would say it's more in his technique; the sideways flick of the axe upon contact with the wood (or the "twist") that pries the wood apart. But the shape of the axe face plays a role big as well.
