What do you think of this?

Seeing a photo of a knife in a white background is difficult because I can't scale it to something. Can someone link me to an image showing a 7" knife with something I can scale it to? Preferably, a whole series of images for different blade sizes. When I get that, then I'll be able to properly determine what size I want :)

Marble makes a good 12 inch bladed bowie style knife out of good steel for around 150 ish I think. By the way those Becker knives are excellent knives and despite what they look like they cut very well. I have the second one you posted. They are a lot smaller than your 12 inch minimum. Check out the Marble "trailmaster" If I rember correctly. Joe

I have a Becker BK2, BK7, and a BK9. I think you'd prefer the the BK9 (9 inch blace) over the 7, as it would be too short and light-weight.

For jungle type hacking, the Brute may be exactly what you're looking for.
I'd certainly prefer it for that use over any of the others. Dang, now I think I need to get one for myself. ;)

The Beckers are well made and very reasonably priced. You won't be disappointed with them.

How many BKs are there? Is there one for every inch? BK5, BK6, BK7, BK8 etc.?

:D :D :D You'd almost think there was one for every inch.

The BK2 is a 5 inch camp knife. The BK11 is a small neck knife (3 1/2).
Go figure.

Is there somewhere that I can view all of the Becker knives? They seem to be what I'm looking for.

Infact... I would not want a knife that is anything shorter than a 12" blade.
Are you serious? You want to lug a 12" bladed knife around with you every day, or do you only plan to carry a knife on camping trips?

Look at all the good knifemakers around today: Dozier, Ingram, Krein, May, etc... you'll see a lot of small to medium sized blades, very few 12" blades. Of course there are some guys who specialize in Bowies and big knives, but how much regular use do they get compared to smaller knives? These guys make a lot of small and medium knives for a reason.

I want a Kabar as well as a Becker. The trouble is, I don't know which one is best.

Here's the Kabar's. There's 8 pages of knives there.

Here's the Beckers. I'm not sure which one is best. Are they all relatively the same aside from size and shape?

Becker bay Becker. You will love them. I have several they are tough as nails easy to maintain and inexpensive enough that you won't have to worry about hard use damage or loss. BK 9 and BK 1 brute are my favorites.

Check ebay you will see them all.

Can you show me some specific fixed blade knives that have a steel appropriate for hunting and quite rigorous activities, as well as not a hollow handle. The knife (to my tastes) is not impractically large by any means. Infact... I would not want a knife that is anything shorter than a 12" blade.

You might want to check out http://www.valiantco.com/java1.html

I daresay they'll chop better than any Kabar or Becker. Why? They've got full convex grinds and are differentially tempered. Check out a review to understand why they are superior: http://outdoors-magazine.com/s_article.php?id_article=78

These are real tools. Be sure you are using all safety precautions - a mistake with a golok can be permanent.

The only thing that worries me about the Becker knives is the handle. It seems very slippery. Also, the blade seems very soft :(

Any knife that has both SAS and Rambo in the description is most likely junk, or at best a good looking wall hanger.

Get yourself a real Sheffield made Bowie. I'm not biased at all though :p

That's not a blade that's too soft - that's a blade that's too brittle. Exactly why you'll be better served with a differentially heat-treated blade that has a soft spine and a hard cutting edge. A soft spine allows the blade to flex without breaking. A blade like that broken becker that has the same heat-treatment throughout will snap under extreme treatment - the spine is just as hard as the cutting edge.

An inexpensive machete will handle the impacts of chopping - they are quite soft. The drawback is that they won't hold an edge - so you've got to constantly re-sharpen them.

A good axe or japanese sword will be differentially heat treated - only the edge will be hard (brittle) while the rest of the steel remains soft (tough). This allows such tools to handle the abuse of impact while remaining sharp.

Aelius that photo just backs up what I am trying to tell you.You can have the hardest blade in the world that rockwells at 70+ and never goes blunt but if it ain't got no flex thats what happens. In a survival situation you are better with a steel that is more forgiving and easier to sharpen!!!
