I recently sold a brand new coat on eBay. I was under the impression that this coat had a hood when I bought it, and when I received it, I found that it indeed did not. The seller told me it was my problem, and I was not eBay savvy enough to pursue it. It has sat in my closet for the past several months, and was only worn once to try it on and then put in the closet. When I sent it, I looked it over for spots etc. It did not have any smell to me.

I just got an email from the buyer stating that it stank of mothballs, had a substance all over it, and was misrepresented. The coat is water resistant, the only option on eBay is waterproof, so I listed it as such. Also, the propagated listing for waterproof also listed Goretex. I was wrong in this regard.

I emailed the buyer back regarding the coat, told him that I was in error regarding the Goretex, but that the waterproof listing was true. Also, I asked him if the packaging was damaged etc. I also requested photos of the "spots". I am awaiting his reply. This is the first time I have sold clothes on eBay, and I am wary of accepting the coat, in its present alleged condition.

Any ideas on what to do? I would just refund the guys money due to the Goretex ordeal. But the allegations of smells and stains? The coat was in brand spanking new condition when it left my house, and I want it returned in that condition.

Good luck. Do you have photos from before you sent it?

My experience has been from the buyers perspective, and in fact we have had experiences with smoke/dirt/moth balls. We asked and reversed the trade. It worked out, the seller claimed we where wrong once they received the item back. <shrug> sorry could be of more help.

Wait for photos back and make sure they send you photos of the packaging. If you sent it UPS then you can have UPS pay for it up to $100 unless you insured it for more. If you sent it US Postal and didn't isure it the your SOL.

If they send you photos and it's screwed up and you sent it UPS then call UPS and tell them it was damaged. They'll pick it up for you, inspect it, have you sign a form and send you a check.

The Gortex error could be enough to reverse the transaction. I know Ebay has set "terms" but when in doubt don't use them and just put what you need in the description.

Hopefully you have your own photos that you used to sell it and can use those as evidence that it was in good condition when it left.

Good Luck!
