What Do You Use Serrations For?

For defense/tactical use, I think serrations enhnace the ability to cut through jackets and such. This is based on some testing I did with an old denim jacket. I know lots of folks will disagree, but I like combo blades.

I have one old bread knife that I use for bagels and Italian bread. I only carry a plain edge for everything else.

Thick rope (climbing rope, marine [boat] rope, tow rope), and other fibrous materials are all I have ever really used it on.

My Buck knife is part serrated and my K-Bar TDI is full serrated. I prefer having at least partial serration just because it adds more uses to the knife. Cutting through tough plastic is a real perk to a tough serrated blade, whether partial or full. I think that serration really just makes it more of a tool.

I've never really given much thought to the different types of serration, haven't really used enough different types to have a solid opinion. Seems to me like most serrated blades would do the same work, within reason of course.

Thats just my two cents.

The only thing I every have used the serrations on my combi blades for was to cut the casings on deli sausages. They are excellent for that. But once the cut is started, it is conventional blade for everything else.

If you keep them sharp they cut a lot of the same stuff a plain blade can, and just as well, if not faster. They are not hard to sharpen with a Sharpmaker, at least the Spyderco ones are not. I used to avoid them as I was afraid to sharpen them too, but recently I got into them and recurves and can now sharpen both with ease, no big deal. I use mine for all sorts of stuff, great for certain vegetables, plastic packaging, ect.

I'm a towboater, and use serrated blades exclusively at work. Cutting through a line (rope) quickly can literally be the difference between life and death. I don't care how sharp a straight edge is, you'd be working on a 3" poly line for 20 minutes before you finally get through it. My Spyderco Tasman Salt makes short work of one, about 20 seconds.
