What do you use your 124 for?

Hey guys. This is my second post after joining last week. After a hiatus of owning many different brands of knives, I'm slowly clearing them out and building up a small collection of Bucks. I'll post a few pictures when my latest ones arrive. Anyway........I've always admired the Buck 124. The lines and the overall aura of the knife are so impressive. I'm considering adding one to the collection but want to ask those of you that use it what you use it for. It is a beast of a knife (and so is my black on black 650.)

My 124 is only used to fondle, admire, and collect dust. It will never be used to cut anything. It is a static investment like my savings accounts, not gaining much in value, but hopefully not loosing as quickly as some of my investments have ....;o)

LOL. Great answers and king of what I thought. I really don't have any safe queens as I like to use them all. But that 124.............probably couldn't bring myself to dirty it up. Question - it looks like a full tang knife, true?

Yes it is and a very full tang compared to many other full tang knives. The tang exactly matches the handle outline and is visible all the way around.

The micarta handled one I have is full tang. I'm not a 124 expert but I believe the phenolic and stag handled ones are not. Any one?

I don't have a phenolic handled one but my stag model, although Im sure it's full tang, is not the same as the wood or micarta models. More like the full tang 119's.

Mine pulls kitchen detail on occassion but I'm not seeing that many of these burgundy micarta being offered at auction so I'm rethinking that. Seems to be a little less common than some others.

I need to qualify my post #10. My stag 124 is a Limited Edition made in 2006 and is built alot different than the classic 124. jb4570 has or did have a Colt model LE with stag built just the same as the classic micarta and wood handled ones.

Veering a little off topic but is the term "full tang" used when the tang runs the full length inside of the handle or when it is the full length AND width of the handle with the slabs attached to the sides?

That's a good question. It's always meant to me that it included those that run the full length inside the handle. There may be other interpretations of the term.

Utah, here's a picture of the small assortment that I have. You can see that the LE stag model's handle is built alot different than the others. The one on the far right is another story all together, not a production model nor a LE but still has the really full tang like the production versions. And for what it's worth, mine are used for fondling and displaying only, but then, so are the vast majority of knives that I own.

My 124's are for just looking at and moving from spot to spot;). Mostly they get moved for a photo every now and then. The first few that were made had the Phenolic handles and all of the newer LE versions are also made that way. The full length rat tail type tangs that are pinned at the pommle/butt cap. All of the others are what I call the Full tang, the tang is the same size as the handle.

My wife bought me a 124 almost 20 years ago as our 6th anniversary present. I have used it as one of my favorite deer hunting knives. I love the ergonomics of it.It truly is the modern frontiersmen knife. I wish Buck would put them back in their production line.Just my 2 cents but I think the 124 is one of the finest production knives ever made!I will never forget that anniversary I came home from a double shift at the prison and as soon as I walked in the door she handed me it in the box. A good friend of mine picked it out for her to get for me.It still looks pretty new even after all the use I have put it through. You sharpen a knife once and you hone it the rest of your life.It keeps an edge and holds it a long time.

Wow guys. Some really great pics and information there. Reminds me of what a good buddy always says- "It's hard to have too many knives." Looks like I'll need at least $150 to get a good one, which means about 5 months of change saving in the change jar. And probably, just like you, when she asks "Why another? Do you really need another??" I just lift my hands and ask her about her clothes. Conversation passes and I go back to planning my next trip on the Mogollon Rim or the Olympic Mountains in Washington. Can I get a witness?

This might sound like blasphemy but I would love to see a smaller version of it, full tang, with the same lines.
