What do you use your 124 for?

Wow guys. Some really great pics and information there. Reminds me of what a good buddy always says- "It's hard to have too many knives." Looks like I'll need at least $150 to get a good one, which means about 5 months of change saving in the change jar. And probably, just like you, when she asks "Why another? Do you really need another??" I just lift my hands and ask her about her clothes. Conversation passes and I go back to planning my next trip on the Mogollon Rim or the Olympic Mountains in Washington. Can I get a witness?

Sounds real familiar as I used to get the same reaction when I wanted another gun or knife. Things changed when my wife became obsessed with guitars and learning to play. We were in a guitar store one day and she found a real beauty she wanted. She said "I really don't need another one, but I just can't help wanting it." That's when I told her, "it's not about needing, it's about wanting and you've finally grasped the concept!". She bought the guitar and never commented again on any of my purchases.

This might sound like blasphemy but I would love to see a smaller version of it, full tang, with the same lines.

Now that would be cool. Sort of like Ka-Bar did with the smaller version of their famous military knife (I forget the name of it, having a senior moment).

Great story Plumber. Bet we all have a few of those. Got a buddy who collects motorcycles. He's made a pact with his wife that when he buys a new one he has to sell one.

I've got a small (6 of them) collection myself, but she didn't say a word when I brought home the 4th one. The last two I got after she passed away, but had she still been here, she just might have had a word or two to say about them.;)

I've used my 124 for quartering and boning large game animals. I agree a shorter version say 4" would make a dandy skinner. DM

I have one that I use for a camp knife, but not this one!

Yes, I almost bought that knife when they 1st came out but the sheath turned me off. DM

Wow... all these nice pictures...
I've always taken "full tang" to mean "full length and width of the handle, visible all the way around the top & bottom edges and the pommel," while a tang that extends all the way to the pommel but is not the full width of the handle, is a "hidden tang" or "stick tang" or "rat tail tang."
The 119, for example, doesn't have a "full tang," but instead has a "full-length stick tang" or "full-length rat-tail tang." (or "full-length hidden tang")
Like most puukkos, say. ;)
I'm loving all these pics of the 124... truly one that I aspire to have one day... Plumber, I really like your stag one, with the shorter handle....!

Yes, Puuk, JB and DeSoto are using the term 'full tang' correctly. The tang on the 119 is a hidden tang, even though it runs the full length of the handle. I've seen this happen, the term gets passed around and used incorrectly and guess which one sticks. Nice photos of a great model, guys. Thanks, DM

You're right David. I've been wrong in my usage of the term. :o Here's a couple of definitions taken from Ka-Bar's knife glossary.

"Full-Length Tang - Extension of the blade steel that runs completely through the handle to the end of the knife.

Full Tang - A tang that shows all around the handle of the knife between two pieces of handle material."

Dave, Think nothing of it. A minor point. Just keep showing us photos of your handsome 124's. DM

I would love the opportunity to use a 124. I send Buck an email every couple of years asking for a 124, mabey one day I could by a new 124. That 5160 steel from the buck hoodlum would be sweet!

If they make a run of old-styled 124s in 5160 (plain non-coated blade) I pledge to buy TWO.

Make that THREE!

Apparently I'm using mine as an investment after one just swam across the bay for $1369.

I use mine to keep the rest inline, and it would be my favorite buck, seems to have its own Mystical Aura, looks, feel, Quality, I will be adding to the collection but have to go the route of let go of a couple then I will add a couple and 124-122 is where I am leaning. As far as Buck bringing back the 124 I think if enough interest they as a company will listen to their customers maybe Joe H will chime in and give us his to cents. Collecting Buck knives and using is a love alot of us share and sharing photo's, knowledge, and experience just help's alot of us newbie's. Thank You to all Buck Forum member's for the help with my (cousin's) knives, hope to have a few back soon from the spa and can not wait to share with everyone.
