What Do You Use Your Axe For Besides Chopping And Splitting?

I love that mate, especially the last picture using the GB hewing axe for detailed work.

Is the other one a Hults Bruks axe?

It's actually the 0.9kg head. I got a Hults Bruk from the early 80s with the 1.2kg head and I would say they are very close to equal in terms of versatility.

They are both great for felling and limbing, I have carved a couple of spoons with the 0.9, split a cord of firewood last fall with it.

I actually like this pattern so much that I'm thinking of selling my GB Scandi forest axe.

I called Hultafors and asked about this axe, they said it was probably made in the early 80s because later that decade they stopped painting the handles.

What are those historic structures in the back ground of your images? Are they part of some historical preserve or museum or just remaining historic structures on some small farm?

These buildings were built at the same time my house was built. The construction started in 1891 and was finished 1901.

This building is where I store my timber, I believe it has always been used to store firewood and other timbers.

This building was used to dry grain and so on, now it's used as a storage space, unfortunately. I'm thinking of making it into a little cabin!

It's great to see that they have survived. I hope you continue to preserve them. What a great inspiration for hewing timbers.

Oh yes, absolutely. I love to just sit and watch these buildings, thinking of the skilled craftsmen who built them using nothing but handtools, mostly the axe!

To Compensate for something else..... A lack of a saw of course! I like to use my axes and other tools to teach other scouts respect for tools in general, proper sharpening, how to care for your gear, how to use it safely, the best head and handle geometry, and a lot of knowledge of how to use it effectively without paying somebody else or getting power tools. And there's plenty more each one learns on his own.
