What do you use your carry knife for?

I have to think a minute... What do I carry? Currently, a pair of Delicas(1 serrated 1 plain), a LM Micra on the keychain, a small SAK and sometimes a Remote Release and a Gerber multi-tool. I have to admit that although the remote release is a very nice knife, the rescue blade version is difficult to use. Maybe I should get a regular one. And the Micra - I don't think I've ever used it for anything! The Gerber got a lot of use, but recently has been displaced on my belt by a Surefire flashlight. I still try to keep it nearby though... never know when you'll need pliers! Can't wait for the SOG Switchplier. Now the Delicas. They get used all the time. One in each pocket. Opening mail, opening boxes, removing staples, minor surgery on self

, freaking out the guys at work because I spend so much money on knives... And don't care that their $5 knife isn't sharp and doesn't cut ANYTHING. That reminds me, it's time to get a sharpener. And I have a Benchmade on the way

I have WAY too much fun here...

WoW! Good thread... I carry two, not at the same time though.

One is the large Sebe, and the other is the MT LCC M/A. This will change soon to the D/A LCC. I carry them just because I love the knives, and any chore that will come up.

Most frequently used is the little A.G. Russell Bird & Trout around my neck. I get lots of mail, for myself and the vol. fire dept. For letters, boxes, packages, opening plastic bags, etc., that's the tool. Yes, it cleans fingernails, slices cheese, sharpens pencils, trims threads, and does a great many other small chores.

The Leatherman PSTII on my left side has does MANY things, but its half-serrated blade is probably used most often to cut the plastic cable ties we use to hang tags at work.

The Blackjack Lightweight Folding Mamba in my right front pocket is handy when I want something a tad more durable than the B&T. It will cut rope, whittle a stake, or do just about any medium/small knife chore. Once in a while this may even include dressing game.

My single edged 440C Bowen Survivor belt buckle have been with me since the 70's. They edge actually sees less use than the caplifter feature. (Don't buy the double edged model; you want something that can open a bottle of microbrew.) The Bowen is in its fourth belt, a custom "Beltster by Bandera Leather (durable belt, and I can carry a 1911 in crossdraw or strongside carry).

I've carried various knives in that RF pocket, but the rest are pretty well fixed. Benchmade Reflex (I'm sure I only imagined that; knives with pushbuttons and springs are ba-a-aad, Ba-a-a-a-dd.), Spyderco Rescue, S&W Rescue model, other pocketknives when I had a Lakota Li'l Hawk on my belt.

Right now, I'm waiting to see the Busse folder, and watching to see if the Buck Strider comes out in a different point shape. If CRKT makes their commemorative "K.I.S.S. my A$$" knive, that will be on the list.

Happy Carrying.

Yesterday, I cleaned a gray squirrel with my Marbles Fieldcraft and last week I sliced open the head of several or more squid with my small sebenza so students could see their "teeth."

On a field trip last Tuesday with a local gradeschool, I sliced open the hibernacula of a couple of beetles so some sixth graders could see their pupae. They were more interested in the knife than the pupae. Sigh...

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

For packages -- its a tough choice between the Endura and Military... For good luck -- PE Spydercard in the wallet, with the call cards and lottery tickets so that I could fund my trips to heaps of Bladeshows! *harhrhararhhhrarrr!*

I don't know if this use has been mentioned...

But I find mine useful as a finger. I open it and use the tip to pull things out of tight spaces, very useful.

And all sorts of other stuff.
