For those who buy wood and don't just use stuff they find, where do you buy it and what kind do you prefer?

Butternut (aka white walnut) is a personal favorite of mine. It has more interesting contrasting grain that basswood and is a bit harder, but still easy to carve. You can order it from Woodcraft. They have a website and sell it in a few different good carving sizes.
