what does everyone use as a wilderness saw

I mostly use the saw on what ever victorinox Im carring. For larger stuff I use a folding gerber saw,or if I plan on doing alot of sawing I'll take a good old bow saw.

How are the slide out gerber-fiskars compared to the folding exchange a blade?

I have to say...I've always been impressed with the cutting ability of the sak saws... I remember as a kid cutting some sizeable limbs with the saw on my vic huntsman...It takes a bit of time but if you are willing to put in the effort, and it'll give you a clean cut. For a more "diesel" alternative you might consider a pocket chainsaw...I've been thinking about gettin one to put in my belt PSK

I use a regular bow saw from the hardware store. I had a folding saw sprung out once and left a long nasty scare on my finger.

Sven. I love them.

I was even able to talk my old unit in the 10th MTN to buy them years ago since they were light and worked great (doubt they still use them with the change of mission though).

The old black handled Gerber Exchange-a-Blade saws have similar saw patterns on their blades, but have the advantage of being able to change the blades; both wood and bone saw blades are offered and they not too difficult to find on line for around $5. The black Exchange-a-Blade handles feel sturdier than the sliding saw’s handle but they also make them about 2 oz heavier than the sliding saw. The Exchange-a-Blade saws with the black handles used to be made in the USA, but Gerber has recently been making them in China (they look the same except there is no “USA” marking on the blade and blade release button).

To make things more confusing, Gerber has a new Gator Exchange-a-Blade saw out with a Gator grip over a SS frame. I have not used this saw, so I don’t know much about it.

Here are some links to the Gerber saws:

I carry a SAK everyday. When in the woods I have the pocket chainsaw and a GW wildlife axe.

The pocket chain saw works great. I carry it in the ATV bag to clear trails.

frank k, thanks for the info,I think I'll try to pick up another usa made exchange a blade for back up since there going to china.Mine has been pretty good so far.

Kochanski suggests a survival saw should be able to saw a hug sized tree easily. In the winter you need a hell of a lot of big body length wood to make a warming fire to allow you to sleep.

I carry a 36" swede saw blade inserted in a hollow belt. I have learned to make a bucking frame for from 2" birch or spruce sticks and some non stretchy twine.

On taboggan trips I like this Swedish Ranger saw. Cuts like a bugger.

Too big for my applications. If I found something like that in half its size, I'd grab it.
