What does Sal carry?

last time I heard it was the stretch! but who no's he could carry anything he likes at this point.

Eric and I have to carry and use upcoming models at all stages from prototype to first production article, so daily rotation is normal. If there is a mod needed, it will usually be more obvious when carried and used. As Jack mentioned, I almost always carry a small knife like a Manbug Leaf for discreet use. My general preference is for a blade about 4.0" and the Stretch 2 XL does get a fair amount of carry time. Local and foreign laws play a part in carry also depending on where I am. When I'm in Kauai, I almost always carry Salts.

Sal, do you ever carry/will you ever again mention the Reverse-S PM2 Prototype???

I LOVE your reverS blades, especially the US-made Dodo, have one with Desert Ironwood. The PM2 with a tough, stout, thicker ReverS like a big Dodo would be amazing...
Cold Steel almost made an EDC usable big reverse-S with the Black Talon 2, but since you can't really sharpen their serrations, unfortunately it can't do much, unlike your Dodo, Lil Matriarch, MA2, Cricket.... heck, I want to put a Cricket (and Wharnie K390 Dfly) blades onto a pair of 91mm SAKS, I love them that much.

I digress, though. Ever carried it or just Eric? Any info about it??
Thanks!! (Carry a Spyderco EVERY day!)

If you ever need any help with that just send me a couple and I will get back to you with how they hold up. ;)

Hi Hashishiin,

That's Eric's design, so he has first crack at it. Any improvements that need to be made, he'll make the adjustments. I'll get to play with it when he's happy with it.

I'm testing and carrying 3 designs for Maniago, two for Seki and one from Switzerland. Those are my projects, so I get first crack. As other prototypes are made or come in, we each get to improve our own designs, then others get to play. I think Eric said he was carrying a Minijimbo today.

Hey Vjb.knife,

I will sometimes do that with customers, but it's usually with a first production piece, and it's with a customer that has a particular bend towards that design.

That's interesting.

I recently purchased this 3 knife set of Kershaw folders (Models 1305, 1310 & 1320) w/backlocks that were supposedly designed by Maniago for Kershaw.

Not sure exactly when they were made but my guess (which based on the model numbers was in the early 80's.

Since you're working w/Maniago currently, doo you happen to know anything about these knives, Sal?

-----------------------------------------------------

The early Hattori designed folders made by Kershaw, like the Models 1040, 1050 & 1070 folders, made in the early 80's all had back locks on them too. I've owned a 1050 for a long time but I've never used it and can't speak to its strength or durability.

Kershaw also made other backlock folders --like the Gentleman's Folder (1993-2), Wildcat Ridge (3140) and Big Joe (4200) -- that I think were made between the 80's-90's that I also own but haven't used either.

-----------------------------------------------------

However, unlike Spyderco, Kershaw's backlocks were placed the the butt end of the knife, not in the middle. I'm guessing that the mid-lock knives are stronger than knife end lock-backs.

Is that why you went with mid lock-backs for your knives, Sal?

Sal Glesser Sal Glesser I think it is incredible that you often respond to threads. Met you guys at Bladeshow Atlanta a few years back and it was an honor. I am a HUGE fan of the Stretch and the Stretch 2. Love the original blade shape and the straight spines. Can I ask if you have ever thought of making a compression lock stretch? This would be a dream come true!! (for me at least) p.s.I am also stoked about the Military 2 and the G10 Stretch XL!!!!!!

Hi Sgt,

I'm not familiar with the first three designs. I am familiar with the Hattori piece. Hattori is a very skilled maker. One of 3 brothers all making knives in Seki. I understand his daughter, who is also very skilled, is running the shop now, but that's from the "rumor mill".

We went with a mid lock-back due to one of my mentor's, Al Mar. There were some advantages to the mid lock-back over the rear lock-back. 1) easier to close one handed and 2) the kick rests on the lock pivot so the blade does not hit the spring. I don't know that they're stronger because of the design. strength is based on other factors. They are harder to make and require closer tolerances.

Hey Anthony,

What better way to know what our customers want than to speak with them?

We probably won't tool up a new handle for the Stretch 2 XL for a Compression Lock. I think the design works best with a mid Lock-back.

Hope I’m not hijacking, but those Kershaws look similar to my Puma 715 4 Stars. Can’t remember if it’s late 70‘s or early 80’s production.

About this manbug leaf... missed that before, it's very exciting, esp as I've been waiting for whatever the next jester run is for my car keys. If this has a DF2-like spear point leaf, I'll be very happy, and it may well win out over the jester. Though I'm coming to think the general Jester/Stretch2/UKPK drop point style may be the best general purpose blade shape Spyderco makes.

In that thread about the manbug leaf, at one point Sal wrote "If it's well received, we'll go from there. steels, colors, etc. What I tell my wife, "Whatever you want"." I know what he was saying, but it got me thinking. If you didn't mind sharing, does Mrs. Glesser have any steel/color/knife preferences in particular? Reckon there are few people with as much experience of Spyderco knives as her, her opinions would be really interesting

Hi Bleasure,

Gail usually carries a few knives. Jester is likely with her most of the time. Lately, she's bee carrying the Stretch 2 XL. She usually has an Urban Damasteel. But she too has may models and switches around.

Hi Sal , any chance of taking the Manix2 a bit smaller like was done on the Para 3. Same lock and all for a less intimidating public use.
