What does stock removal mean?

If you want to learn to make knives there are a lot of people here who can and will help. Since you appear to be very new to this, a visit to a local knifemaker would help you a lot and answer most of your initial questions.

Filling out your profile and telling us a little about yourself and where you are goes a long way toward being taken seriously. You might even find that there are knifemakers close to you who would offer to help.

johnnyKnives, don't give up. The regulars here can get a little tired of answering the same questions all the time, but they are great people and more willing to share their expertise and knowledge with newbies than any other group I have ever seen.

Yes, there is the ability to search the forum and Google questions. However, in the time it takes to post a rude response, a person could simply answer the question.

I disagree. While that may be true for each question, when there are a LOT of them, the time taken up can be immense. It's along the lines of "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." Not to mention, why is the 30 seconds I might spend answering that post less valuable than the 30 seconds the OP could have spent googling to get his answer?

That aside, the reason for the increasing level of frustration in responses to posts like this is that the really simple questions that could be answered with 30 seconds of work by the poster dilute the useful information for the rest of us. I have many times seen good, solid questions by people who did their homework and are looking for information that just isn't out there and published, get lost to the 4th page of this forum because of a huge number of posts that could have been answered by google in 10 seconds. Frankly it's really frustrating to those of us who put in the effort to teach ourselves.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but the attitude expressed above that I should waste my time because somebody who isn't willing to try for themselves can't be bothered to do a simple search is just infuriating.

When you have been around here for a while and seen the same basic questions repeated with ever increasing frequency, you either get a little cynical or you start to ignore the questions. Most people who have an inquiring mind and the will to do new things are able to pick up basic knowledge, then ask specific questions. Taking the initiative is a mark of personal pride and the will to achieve.

You don't have to "waste your time". You can simply move on without responding to the question. If you cited my entire post, you will notice that I said that you could choose to ingnore the question rather than post a rude or sarcastic post.

Noticing that you are a maker, I would wonder how many customers you might gain by taking that small investment of time in answering a question in a cordial manner?

Personally, I have purchased several knives from makers primarily because I liked the way that they deal with people and answer their questions.

With all due respect, my post was neither rude, nor sarcastic. Nor for that matter was it directed at the OP. My reference to time wasting was not directed at the OP either, it was in reference to your post stating:

Yes, there is the ability to search the forum and Google questions. However, in the time it takes to post a rude response, a person could simply answer the question.

Your assertion that I should simply answer a simple, repetitive question, rather than tell a person that it might be in their best interest to do some research on their own, in my opinion is an assertion that I should spoon-feed somebody rather than help to teach them. That, in my estimation, is a waste of time.

Noticing that you are a maker, I would wonder how many customers you might gain by taking that small investment of time in answering a question in a cordial manner?

Admittedly, I'm a hobby maker so my livelihood isn't on the line. Even if it were though, I would respond in the same manner. Most likely, even more vociferously. As a maker, I feel that it is my responsibility to give something back to makers who are starting out to pay back the debt that I owe to the makers who got me started. Let me tell you something, the people who have made the biggest difference in my knifemaking weren't molly-coddlers. They gave it to me straight, challenged my attempts to be lazy and let things slide, and treated me as they themselves wanted to be treated; as equals.

If you go and look back over my posts, you will see that I have on hundreds of occasions cordially answered questions, oftentimes spending an hour or more to recheck my facts and try to state things as clearly and completely as possible. It falls under the same category of "paying it forward" I have described above.

Personally, I have purchased several knives from makers primarily because I liked the way that they deal with people and answer their questions.

Personally, I do not pass judgement on people based on a single interaction with them over the Internet, but that's just me...

Indeed...and so, I will leave you to it now.

The funny thing about your zeroing in on my original post was that it was not directed toward you.

Here you are arguing the point of debating this issue "wasting your time".

Take it for what it is worth. I stand behind my original thought regarding the answering of questions in a rude or sarcastic manner. I really do not care what you do in this regard. It was simply an observation. Your response is exactly why I usually refrain from posting in this manner. I have just noticed how arrogant some people treat others lately on the forums.

I am not one to tell you how to run your life or your hobbyist knifemaking business. Do whatever it is that makes you happy.

On a last note, I do not "pass judgment on people based on a single interaction with them over the Internet". I do realize that the only stupid question is the one that is not asked.

I hate to keep this going but I have heard and read this before on many many forums of all kinds of types not just here. What I have never understood is why the complainant doesn't see it from the web owner's point of view (maybe they do I don't know.) If someone asks a question, a basic question, one that is everywhere on the Internet, then that is a good thing for the forum. Why? Because the page gets indexed with a common question. Each indexed page with good information is a way to support the site because they get page rank, higher and higher.

For example, what is someone types this in google:

what does stock removal mean in knifemaking
stock removal mean in knifemaking

Guess what? They get this thread, first hit, good for the site. If they do not ask so specifically they do not get the site, but someone might type that in, in question format. Less specific:

stock removal knifemaking

You get page rank two in a ten site list. You get front page if you list 100, which I do often. It's number twelve in the hit list. Not bad.

stock removal knife making (about 15th)

In any case, it helps the website. As I said I'll be more careful and I don't take it personal at all. I just thought it might clear up things with another way to look at it. I appreciate all help here.

Nothing I like better than typing a couple thousand words about how I don't feel like typing ten words to answer a question. Plus, it bumps the thread that pisses me off sooooo much straight the the top of the list.

I agree. The "stock removal" is explained before to OP, then he asks the same question again, right after the #32 post at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=680839&page=2 thread. Notice that, those thee threads all opened by Mr. Johnny...

If somebody wanted to discourage all makers to reply with honesty and wanted to piss them off and alienate them from the forums, this kind of strategy would be very useful. Somebody with enough intelligence to use a computer or an internet forum, should be able to learn a term like "stock removal" from http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=680794. If he doesn't understand by reading these and ask the same question again, there is a problem: I dont think he is stupid or what. It is quite obvious from his words that he selects his words quite brilliantly, grammar is OK and he is proved that he is a clever guy at post #29.

There is something suspicious about these threads. I guess mods are aware of that...

I was going to write out a page that could be added to the sticky but I wanted it to include original material not just links (nothing wrong with just links as long as they aren't dead) but I only know from here and not from experience.
Info such as this, what type of grinder to get, what type of steel to get, where to get it and how to heat treat it should be easily reached in the sticky. Im not pointing any fingers, I just think that there could be a little revision.

I can't find it. I saw about changing to allow email but not PMs. Where do you change it? Thank you, BTW, I can't take any more "suspcious" threads comments. I made a mistake folks by not reading carefully in the other post. That's about all I know to say. I hesitated to even put this because it will bump it but I would like to use the PM feature.

I just realized that I had e-mails disabled myself...
