what does you think about this survival kit?

does not look bad but the wire saw is crap, but you'd be surprise on what you can put together for right around the same money and know what you have. do you have a knife ? a whistle? waterproof matches? firesteel, think simple and keep it simple ...

when i looked, for an ready survival kit, i found this kit http://www.specialforces.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=27543&cat=565&page=1
its looks pretty cool, its got all the minimum gear, and with good fixed blade, and with good multi-tool i think its can be a great survival kit?

mine only worry is that may be the things in the kit are cheap and wont hold long?

Hard to assess the quality. The list of items is good for a pocket kit. Here some sources for the stuff separately:

Matches: REI

Wire saw: http://www.bestglide.com/Wire_Saw_Info.html

Whistle: ACR WW-3 various sources. They have a 3 pack at http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/acr_emergency_whistle.html

Firesteel: http://countycomm.com or the link above for a mini version.

Fishing kit and button compass: http://www.bestglide.com

Knife: Victorinox Classic

Sewing kit: I collect them from motels whenever I travel. A drugstore may have them too.

The rest is pretty generic hardware and drugstore stuff. Add a mini roll of duct tape (REI), LED microlight (County Comm) and some tinder. You could make your own tinder from petroleum jelly and cotton balls or buy Tinder Quick tabs (a few come with the mini firesteel).

For $35 and shipping, I'd have more fun making my own kit from known quality sources. There are some survival kits parts for sale in the gadgets and gear forum. If you want a ready made kit, the Adventure Medical kit is a good start and the ones at http://www.bestglide.com are good quality.

1. Seems expensive for the items.
2. Unknown quality of items.
3. Marketed as a "combat survival kit", but I can't see anything in that kit directly related to combat.
4. You can put together a better kit or two for that price yourself.

(Fixed: "What does one think about this survival kit?" or "What do you think about this survival kit?")

It does seem expensive for what you are getting. They only generalize the items, not giving maker, etc. I would take this kit if it was all there was, but I'm thinking that the Doug Ritter kit is much better in terms of quality and function.

Check out equipped.com, where they have evaluated and rated several kits and other gear. Well worth a look.

I really perfer putting my own kit together, I think you would also save your self a little money by doing it.

The "lifeboat" matches and whistle are fine. The firesteel also appears to be OK. But the info on the rest is symbolized by the highly uninformative: "knife"!!!! Seems like an almost deliberate effort to be obtuse about what you are getting for your $$.

Trouble is, buying the piece parts from a number of different sources will cost you more in shipping than makes sense. I agree with the above idea of assembling what you have and supplementing as needed.

(And were's the salt?)

Hey Guys..

Berk..

I also agree that you could make one better yuorself...

either that or look into one of Ritter's kits..
He knows what he's doing..

Alot of these kits are a little fluffy....

looks cool.. but a little too expensive.....

i also prefer building my own kits....
the doug ritter kit is pretty cool, it has some really nice components in it....
i got one as a gift a while back and ended up adding a few things to it.....

The kit in the original post struck me as being overpriced and short on quality.

The operative word in PSK is Survival, IMO all items in a kit should directly improve your chances of Survival not just be small and nifty things that fit.
Most likely you already have lots of the compontents of a kit, spend the money to upgrade or purchase what you don't have.

The Ritter kit is a great place to start but a PSK should be tailored to your skills and your specific needs. Mac

I would generally be hesitant to buy anything from a site named (insert really sexy military/police unit here).(anything), first off. At least they are giving a cut to the Warrior Foundation, good cause.

It doesn't look horrible. The matches are good or the box is a good forgery, the ferro rod is something that you have to work at screw up. The knife looks like a Classic clone, not a high mark. I'd pull the candle out of it, or at least put it in a small ziplock, shame on them. The saw might suck a lot, might suck a little, might actually be ok, which I knew which one it was.

I'm never entirely comfortable seeing water purification tabs in a kit like this. Shelf sensative item, and they don't have the warning for Iowa residents concerning the legal issues that that state has decided to raise on water purification tablets. *scowls* Makes me wonder if they bother to pay the Haz-Mat fees on the matches, and properly mark the package. Last thing I'd want to see if you buy this guy to evaluate it only to get it seized by USPS and a fine, or find out that you need to pay extra shipping before a private shipper will let you get your package. It's rare, but it happens- better to play it by the numbers than fudging it.

All in all, it's not horrible, but for the same money I think you can do better. I'd rather have a Ritter PSP, a Vic Huntsman or a multi with a saw, a mini Bic and a match case, but it's more than what they've got there both for cost and effectiveness.

i have one of those pro-force tins.....

go with the adventure medical psp :D
ooorrrrrrrr as everyone suggested, put one together yourself since its super fun :)

I see you solved the space blanket size problem by piggy-backing it with ranger bands-- nice and clean.

Do I see Gerber baby bottle liners in there for water carriers? Great idea! I imagine you would use part of a purification tablet and hang it with a stick to wait for it to work or.....?

Great kit , it really does not matter if you build it yourself or buy a pre-fabbed one your going to add to your needs , all kits evolve from what they started out at to what they are now, great picture also !:D

Thanks for the comments

Those are gerber baby milk bags, they have a ziplock and are very solid. Better than condoms IMO, but you're right, I'll have to use part of a purification tablet. I'd really like to see a half liter or liter sized container that will fit into the PSK, but the search continues!

Nice kit.

Why not just use a gallon size zip lock freezer bags or one of the quart sizes is you only want about a liter? I love them.

Cheap, collapsable, pretty sturdy, sealable, etc.

Just wondering?

Short answer, the ziplock portion of your average ziplock bag is too long and folding that is problematic.

Something like this would be good (This is probably less than a liter, but it shows an example of how a much larger container can fit into a smaller kit)

Basically the width of the ziplock portion is tailored to fit into the container without having to fold it.

Liter sized would be ideal, so you could just pop a purification tablet in. Half liter sized would be acceptable though, you can split one tablet in two. The current gerber milk bags hold 6 oz, or .177 liters --- so needless to say it would be a PITA to split a tablet almost 6 ways.

For those who perfer altoids tins to SAS tins, I'm sure a half liter sized version could be created with it's ziplock width determined by the altoids tin length.
